Believe in this magic

Before you spew your tea everywhere, let me share a little secret with you about my wonderful colleagues here at at Gaelick HQ, they are not really into the Eurovision. I know, appalling isn’t it? When you consider that not alone are we gay, which should make us somewhat interested in the whole occasion, but also that we are Irish. We’ve won it 7 times. Seven times people! Yet not a peep of a post about what a big day today is as the lovely cailin Niamh will belt her heart out for us in Oslo tonight. I couldn’t sit by and let this day pass without a mention. So I’ve taken a break from the mainframe.

Tonight at 8pm on RTE2 with Marty Whelan and BB3 with someone who is not Graham Norton and ergo not worth listening to, the spectacle that is the second semi final will be beamed into our pubs and living rooms. Considering how poorly we have done in recent years, it’s a no wonder the Irish are somewhat despondent about the event. Not any more! Not only will we qualify but we should finish in the top 10. Yes, I’m Irish and yes I am therefore biased, but look and listen for yourselves.

Is there a dry eye in the house? Seriously? What a ballad! What a woman! Not only does she have the voice, she has the pedigree. Niamh not only represented us previously, she won in 1993 in Millstreet with In your Eyes, bringing Ireland’s tally of wins to five. And for those of you who believe omens, the last time we won was in 1996 with Eimer Quinn and The Voice and guess where that competition was held? Oslo in Norway.  Is that a sign? I’d like to think so. The favourites this year for the title are Azerbaijan with Safura’s Drip Drop, who wil also appear in our semi final, and Germany’s 19 year-old Lena Meyer-Landrut and her song Satellite. Check them out below. Both really good catchy songs.

For those of you not interested in the music and more interested in the ladies, one particular lady has been getting a lot of attention and not just for her singing. Armenia’s Eva Rivas.

She will be singing tonight, she’s second in the lineup after the truly awful Incognito.

So don your best green frock, leprechaun hat, verdigris pair of pantaloons and prepare to belt out “When I cry it’s for the lonely”

Niamh Kavanagh – It’s for you

Look into these eyes, hold onto these hands, believe in this heartbeat
Though you’re afraid that I might break just hold on
Shadows only haunt you when darkness crowds your heart
So let the light of my love shine bright

When I cry it’s for the lonely
When I pray it’s for the lost and strayed
When I love like there’s no tomorrow
No more words to say it’s for you

Look straight ahead, hold onto you dreams, believe in this magic
Open your eyes, open your mind and expand
Shadows only haunt you when darkness crowds your heart
So let the light of my love shine bright

When I cry it’s for the lonely
When I pray it’s for the lost and strayed
When I love like there’s no tomorrow
No more words to say…

When shadows haunt you and darkness crowds your heart
Let the light of my love shine bright

When I cry it’s for the lonely
When I pray it’s for the lost and strayed
When I love like this there’s no tomorrow
No more words to say it’s for you (it’s for you)
It’s for you

  • Is Ireland a sure thing in this year’s Eurovision? The people of Ireland think so.

A recent competition asking people to guess the outright winner of the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest currently has 44% of people picking Ireland as the victor in the annual singing fest.

There is a feeling that our time has come this year and that Ireland will be bringing home the prize.

The competition, which was launched by DoneDeal.ie, the website that helps people buy what they want and sell what they don’t, has Sweden in second place with only 8% of the votes and Azerbaijan in third with 5%.

When it comes to putting our money where our mouth is, though, the results are very different – PaddyPower currently has Azerbaijan as favourite and Ireland at 12/1 to win.

  • This is the first year in aaaaaaages that I’m not embarrassed by our entry in the competition.

If it were the old days when there wasn’t block-voting, we’d be a shoo-in for Top 3 in the final. As it is, I think we’ll qualify alright but can’t see us in the Top 5

Also, how come there is such a difference in quality between Tuesday’s semi and tonight’s? Tuesday’s was a steaming pile of poo, tonight will be roses in comparison

  • We have won it 7 times alright, but that was when it was a “song” contest and not a “show” contest.  Best songs don’t get anywhere these days

  • We won for ages then we did’nt want to win it because it was starting to cost to much.  Its a bit like the weather either were giving out over it being to hot or to cold.  They must be getting desperate they are really draging them out of the past now.  It has been 17 years since Niamh sang whats next Linda Martin back again with ‘In your eyes’ the rap version or ‘Rock and Crack Kids’ the next generation?

I disagree, look at Norway last year, even the bloc voting couldn’t stop it winning, great song and it deserved to win..I have a feeling this year could be our year, I am beyond excited, its so hard to focus on work today!

  • I find Germany’s song really catchy, but it’s better as a polished pop video than when she sings it live, she looks a bit awkward up there!
