The Real L Word

Sunday evenings will never be the same again, well not from June 20th anyway.  At 10pm that night Americans will be able to see Showtime’s new reality series The Real L Word.  I get the distinct impression that this show will consist of lots of women talking about positive visibility while we are shown shots of sensationalised kissing, but I will hold my cynicism for now.

We are being told the show is about

Real life. Real drama. Real lesbians

Hard not to be cynical when you look at that poster though isn’t it, but as I have said, let’s wait to see what it turns out to be.  It might not have gratuitous shots of women’s bodies and random snogs.

Then again!!!

Showtime’s website has a preview and it seems that they are trying to “turn fiction into reality” but who’s reality is this?  Have I missed something?  Please don’t tell me all you fine ladies out there live like this while I am stuck behind my desk from 9am-5pm!  Having said that, we lesbians are hard to please, and it is great to have visibility, I just wonder what Mickey, Rose, Tracy, Nikki, Jill and Whitney will bring to us.  I don’t doubt that the six women believe in the project, I just hope Showtime don’t sexualise them to much.

So who among these six look the most interesting, well to me there are a few.  Nikki and Jill are planning a wedding which could be interesting but I think Tracy could prove the one to watch, she is dating someone with children, so we may actually get to see someone fly a flag for many lesbian and bi mothers out there as well as show the world at large a portion of the gay community they might not have thought much about.

I have my fingers and toes crossed that the show does a good job at showing us as real people, I just hope it’s not made to titillate straight men, time will tell.

  • Being familiar with the LA scene it must be terribly easy to produce shows like this – there are more than enough L-Word clones hanging out on Robertson and in places like the Abbey/Ultrasuede.  Of course we do know this is only one piece of the story – but then the les family is now realised to be a very wide church so the diversity (thankfully) does extend to the girlier end of the market – and rightfully so!  Viva la diffrence!

  • I agree that diversity is the way to go Laura, I’m more concerned about how the program makers will treat the stories – will they sensationalise?
