Review: Tegan & Sara in Dublin
Everyone’s favourite Canadian lesbian pixies, Tegan and Sara Quin, were in town last night, following their Monday gig in Belfast.
Speaking of Dublin and Belfast, Pink was taking a break from the Irish leg of her own tour, with a stop last night at PantiBar, where from the stairs she took in the opening night Bunny’s new show, Hutch. So no pressure there, Bunny.
(There was also rumour that Tegan and Sara tribute band, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Tegan and Sara – also known as Heathers – was in the audience of the Olympia gig.)
Quite the celesbian-fest for all concerned, then. Clean-up in Dublin city centre!
But I digress.
Back to the Olympia. The Quin sisters opened the show with a number of tunes – yes, much like papa Quin, we say “tunes” here, thank you very much – from their latest album, Sainthood. If the crowd was pleased by these openers, they were utterly delireh and exireh when the band started up with some of Tegan and Sara’s older material, from albums The Con, So Jealous and further back.
The audience of lesbians, as well as minorities such as straight couples (celebrate diversity, etc.) absolutely lost the head for tracks including as The Con and Nineteen. The encore included largely stripped down versions of songs, including an adorable rendition of Back in Your Head comprising just vocals, guitar and xylophone.
For anyone who was at the Tegan and Sara gig a couple of years ago in the Temple Bar Music Centre (or The Button Factory, if you insist), last night’s concert was better for all the right reasons – the venue seemed more suitable for both band and audience, and this time around, the lesbots and baby dykes seemed far more in control of their hormones.
Well done, all ‘round.
Tegan and Sara’s latest album, Sainthood is out now.

Such a fabulous night!! I loved Sara’s inane ramblings and the older songs were just amazing!!
Dublin gig was amazing! They get better and better
Such an awesome night, I got to throw jellies at Sara!
Heathers were indeed there, they had one of the boxes.
I can’t believe I missed this :’( I hope they come back sometime.
The only people who compare Heathers to Tegan and Sara are those who have either never bothered to listen to one or both bands, therefore relying on the lazy man’s comparison; the fact that they’re both female twin musicians, OR they just aren’t the slightest bit musical slash are 90% deaf in both ears. Gig was great- wudda liked more banter though!
Clare- I know the Tegan and Sara to Heathers comparison gets old after a while, but I don’t think the fact theyre both twins is the ONLY thing they have in common, I think it’s the harmonies and the acoustic guitar too. I’ve had two people come in while I was listening to Heathers and ask if it was Tegan and Sara, so there’s got to be something else to it!
Having said that, I don’t think any of their songs sound like Tegan and Sara’s songs, and I know they don’t like to be compared to them even though they love them, so…
Hee. Arragh, Clare, don’t be worrying. Actually, I didn’t know Heathers are twin sisters, so it’s definitely not that!
I am currently experiencing a loss of hearing in my left ear, though, so maybe that’s it. *resists urge to reach for Q-Tip*
The gig was great craic, and the banter was mighty! @Banana2 and elaine – Shame you two missed it! I’m sure they’ll be back, and hopefully it’ll be soon. (If we hear of anything, we’ll write about it on this here blog a.s.a.p.!)
@click here,
*Whoot!*
I mean… very much appreciated!
