AMACH! LGBT Galway
It’s still not easy to be gay in this country, and even less so if you live in a rural area. What do you say to a venue manager who won’t let you book an event because they say they are Catholic? Who do you turn to to get a fair hearing and a sense of inclusiveness? Well if you live in the Galway area you should check out AMACH, a group which was established as an umbrella group for the activities of LGBT people in that area.
According to their website
AMACH! LGBT Galway aims to reflect equally the diversity within the LGBT community by encouraging positive participation from the community. We actively campaign to achieve a solid and safe support structure for the LGBT community in Galway
The group goes on to say they were formed from the community, by the community and are a part of the community. Working towards this end the group are currently looking at properties to act as a resource centre. The groups chairperson, Nuala Ward believes strongly in the project saying
Between age, gender and sexuality there’s a wonderful diversity in Galway…. [AMACH] is a step forward but there’s a long way to go
The group was officially launched in early July by Senator Davis Norris.
They are asking people for their feedback. If you live in the Galway area what do you think of this group and is there anything you would like them to focus on? You can contact them via their site.
