There is great interest already, so it should be a great night and an opportunity to meet and socialise with people from all over the country.
Gay Clare
One of the main challenges faced by gay men, bisexuals and lesbians in Clare is the lack of opportunities to socialise in an open and comfortable environment.
Established in 2003, the Gay Clare organisation has worked towards tackling that problem by organising social events and supplying information and support for gay people in the county.
Back in the bad ol’ days, gay people in Clare felt very isolated and alone. Many didn’t know any other gay people, and attitudes to gay people were backward at best, and at worst violent. Often, gay people felt the need to move to larger cities, and indeed other countries, where they could live without fear of intimidation or being attacked. “In light of this Gay Clare initially held monthly meetings to give gay people a chance to meet up, make contact with others, and start to create a much-needed sense of community,” Diarmuid of Gay Clare tells Gaelick. “In the last few years we have arranged several gay discos in Ennis.”
OutWest
OutWest Ireland is a voluntary social and support group for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual people in the West of Ireland. It was founded originally in 1997 as Mayo Roscommon Outreach by a number of gay people from the region, with the aim of providing the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual community in the West with a support network. The group holds an informal meeting on the first Friday of every month at various venues in the West of Ireland.
The meetings give Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual people an opportunity to meet together in relaxed and friendly atmosphere and to discuss group events and gay issues. People attend from Sligo, Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Galway and the midlands. On average 25 people attend, new faces appear regularly and are always welcome.
The group organises social outings and events, some of which are discos, several times a year, in various venues in the West of Ireland.
Gay Westmeath
Gay Westmeath was founded in 2009 to develop networking opportunities for gay people living in the county, following the closure of GLAM.
With the support of a small committee, Gay Westmeath will develop the new group as a valuable and enjoyable resource for the county’s growing gay, lesbian and transgendered population.
Gay Westmeath is always looking for volunteers to help bring some diversity to the group and to the programme of events it organises. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch!
So, everyone, get thee to Ennis on Saturday! If you miss it you’ll regret it.
