Lesbians – Are we our own worst enemy?

Last Friday I decided to pop out for a few drinks with some friends.  We met up in The Front Lounge and after a few scoops we headed off to the new ladies’ night at The George, Pussy Wagon.  We were all looking forward to it as the George is an institution and none of us had ever been there when it was ladies only.  The Front Lounge had a great atmosphere, so when we headed over my friends were ready for a dance.

When we arrived, it was €5, we popped our coats in the cloakroom and headed in.  Unfortunately it was half empty, and that is being generous.  The dance floor was packed but everywhere else was fairly empty.  I hope it picks up after a few weeks as having a ladies’ night in the George is long overdue.

It has gotten me thinking, why is it that the same lesbians who complain that there are no nights for us don’t attend the night when it is put on?  Alright, some people are not taken with the George, I can understand that, I just feel it is a shame that a new major night is put on yet attended so badly.

I am a big fan of caKe and am delighted to see so many attend, but variety is wonderful, so why not support new nights, or at least give them a try?  Is the reason most major gay pubs/clubs don’t try to attract lesbians down to the simple fact that we lesbians don’t represent a large enough percentage of the LGBTQ community who get out there and party?  I find that hard to believe, but I couldn’t blame The George if they cancel Pussy Wagon unless it picks up.  After all, Friday nights are usually heaving in there.

Are lesbians their own worst enemy, or are the clubs just not giving us what we want?  What do you think?

  • Already commented on this in a previous Pussy Wagon post, but it was a really disappointing night, though it was nothing the George did wrong as far as I’m concerned, the music was great (til later on when it got a bit dancy for me and mine) the door price was even better. Out of my group there were a lot of people who were too broke after Pride weekend to go out, so I’m hoping there’ll be a better showing next time.

  • Well to start with it might help if they changed there name is Pussy Wagon the best they could have came up with??
I stay in Scotland and am a lesbian and I can say if I was visiting Dublin and the main attraction’s name was Pussy Wagon I think I may give it a miss .
I Do know that Dublin has some very good attractions and the woman are fit so maybe we are our own worst enemy’s .

  • Agree with both comments.

Pussy Wagon is an awful name. Bleeugh

Also, Shikei I was thinking that maybe it was too close to Pride too. Everyone was pretty broke and knackered after the festivities for it.

    Hopefully it’ll pick up.

Are we our own worst enemies – some are alright. You’ll always have people who complain about there not being enough “women only” spaces but then they are the ones who don’t fill the spaces that are already there.

I’m glad The George are starting to pander to ladies. It’s really disliked by all the women I know and is seen as a guy’s pub. I guess they need our money now too :)
