I wish I was a woman so I could be KD's slave. Her music sends me to places that I could never have imagined. Well KD if you want a man slave i'm here for you as well. I cook, clean, massage, and give head like your wildest dreams were just beginning.

I no longer read comments in articles about Cynthia Nixon. They're far too upsetting. Actually, that's my policy that I never observe. I always end up reading them, and always end up upset.
I think I found the article you're taking about on AE. I can see how people are confused but it annoys me when people demand a person tell them how they identify. I always want to say, "I'm sure if you ever need to know, she'll tell you."On her official website, they use the feminine pronouns; that should be enough information for everybody. Also makes a v good point re: facial hair. While most women chose to get rid of it, does it define you as butch if you don't bleach/wax/shave?

Interesting article on an interesting topic - thanks canuckjacq!
I was reading about Cynthia Nixon's engagement and came across rampant homophobic commentary about her partner Christine Marinoni - for the very reasons you touch on.
I love gender diversity... gender play... gender blurring... Occasionally labels are useful , but often they are just reductive boxes...
There was an interview with musician JD Samson (another one for your list!) on AfterEllen a while back, followed by a flood of comments because the interviewer didn’t DEFINE JD as butch or trans... some inferring that by omitting the label, AfterEllen were not fulfilling an editorial responsibility... wtf??? Can some people only think in binary??

I think that's often a straight thing -- they see almost all lesbians as a little bit butch. I think it's the lack of pandering to male tastes that marks us in their eyes. I think from within the community, it's a little clearer.

oohh.......interesting article
I know a few lesbians who think butches are bad reps for our community. I think they flick the Repressed Homophobia button in many queers, which I find fascinating. It's as if they 'blame' butches (though strangely not femmes) for the straight perception that there has to be a 'man' and a 'woman' in a same-sex relationship.
It's funny though, I think butch is all on the inside and has little to do with clothing or outward appearance. I know that one of my ex-workmates though one of my friends was butch and she soooooooo isn't, I mean she may look it but not at all. Interesting.....
