Pride of Cats
Dublin Pride is over, but don’t be putting away the rainbow flags and whistles just yet folks, we still have five more drinking session chances to celebrate our diversity. Check Gooner’s article with a Pride rundown.
On top of the Pride festivals in that article, we also have Kilkenny’s Out For the Weekend, running over the last weekend in August, Friday 27th to Sunday 29th. As if you needed an excuse to visit one of Ireland’s most beautiful and fun cities.
An interesting, but completely useless, piece of information for you, which has nothing to do with OutForTheWeekend: Eleanor Butler was one of the Butlers who lived in Kilkenny castle. She met and fell in love with Sarah Ponsonby and they ran away to Wales where they became known as The Ladies of Llangollen. Do the Kilkenny Castle tour and ask the guide about her; I dare ya
Anyway, on with the important stuff. We spoke to Alan, one of the guys running the Kilkenny festival and asked him how things are going for their maiden voyage.
We’re still working out the lineup for the weekend, but we have the amazing Joanna Ryde helping us with that end of things, so with her connections it’s bound to be great. All I can announce so far is that there will be a BBQ called Sausage Fest (any and all puns intended) and a BIG party on the Sunday night called The Queer Bash. As for the performances over the weekend just keep coming back to www.OUTForTheWeekend.ie to check the lineup as it’s announced.
If you fancy yourself as a performer, you can get in touch with the crew who will check out your talent and let you cut loose during the festivities; just mail them at hiya@OUTForTheWeekend.ie.
There are 8 of us on the production team… we have 2 lesbians, 3 gay guys, a drag queen, a straight guy, and a straight woman…. I think we’ve covered all bases there! The team are really great, but the best thing is that we all share the same enthusiasm for making this a weekend to remember.
And it’s been a long time coming. Alan and a mate of his had the idea for the weekend as well as some of the events 11 years ago but never got round to organising until now. The scene in Kilkenny is small, to say the least; like most small, rural cities and towns, there is a core group of people working their bums off to create a scene and support for the local LGBT community.
The scene in Kilkenny good, not great, but good. There are a few locals really working hard to organise events and nights out. One particular group is called Dining OUT Kilkenny and they meet in different restaurants once a month for a meal and a few drinks. It’s a great way to catch up with people, and get fed at the same time!Since the closure of Dignity there hasn’t really being one specific place for gay people to go, so we’re all back drinking in our locals, which isn’t a bad thing, but it would be nice to have a “gay friendly” night every couple of weeks.
As well as the stuff I mentioned, there’s going to be bands, DJ’s, street performances, a bit of food, activities for younger people and few sessions for us older ones.
