You’re 27, the recession hits and you lose your job. What do you do? Sit around in your pjs all day, eating cereal from the box and watching Ellen in the afternoons? After all there are no jobs out there. Not if you’re Grace O’Sullivan you don’t. If you’re Grace, you get up of your bum cheeks and think “what shall I do? I know! I’ll sell sex toys!”. Ok, it didn’t actually happen that way, as she told us.

I lost my job in December and with the skill that I have in web, marketing, publishig and design I decided to get selling online. To be perfectly honest, it was a big accident. I was trying to set up a horse riding store, selling all kinds of equestrian goods.

While I was searching for suppliers I, somehow, came across an adult toys wholesale company. I called them and their terms seemed to be appropriate for how I wanted to run a business. After a small pang of guilt I decided that I would give it a go and came up with Secrets Ireland.

From riding to roiding, it’s not that big a jump after all. God there are so many saddle, tack and leather jokes in my head right now that I feel an overload in progress. Must resist. Back to the lady at hand. It takes a certain type of person to set up a business during one of the worst recessions to hit the world; brave or crazy?

It’s been tough, but so much fun that I barely notice it. The redundancy gave me the kick that I needed to have a go at my own thing. Everyone I know has been so supportive, even my own family! I was also really lucky to have the guys who developed my system backing me, Bang ecommerce, they have been so helpful and I would have been lost without them.

It also helped the Grace was setting up a shop that was desperately needed in Ireland.A lot of adult shops and sites are male-dominated and have little more than a rampant rabbit for the ladies.

There are a few adult sites out there that are targeted at the Irish market. Only a very small number of these sites however are run by Irish companies. I’ve taken a little bit of a more feminine angle on my site, as a result it has been very popular with women.

When I started to tell some people of what I was thinking of doing, I noticed that women thought it was great and took me seriously but men made silly comments and thought it was something dirty. As a result I found myself aiming the site at a female and a private audience, I wanted to give it the feel of a site that sells serious products and not something dirty.

One look at Secrets Ireland and you can tell she’s succeeded. It’s a sleek site that looks more like a make-up store than something selling all manner of wonderful pleasure pods.Vibrators are a big seller including the aforementioned rabbit.

We are getting a sample Estim product in soon and I’ve been told that it will be my new favourite. I will hopefully be stocking these by September.

Estims? They’re a new one to me, but will apparently be taking over the bedroom soon.

They are brilliant, its a small metal dildo that is hooked up to a small controller. The controller has a 9V battery in it and this sends a gentle electric charge to the dildo. This little electric pulse causes muscles to contract… can you see where I am going with this?
