Traditional Debs vs Gay Prom

TRADITIONAL DEBS VS GAY PROM
By Róisín Ingle
THE limos are booked, the fake tan applied and the gúnas are hanging on wardrobe doors all over the country. But while the traditional Debs may be an unforgettable rite of passage for this country’s heterosexual young people it can provide a serious social challenge for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) school goers.
“Many of our members just don’t feel comfortable going to the event,” says Director of Irish gay youth charity BeLonG To Michael Barron. “And with Catholic management still firmly in place in most schools in this country, many of them are not able to bring a same-sex partner to their Debs.”
Enter, the Gay Prom, an alternative debs for the LGBT community which is taking place on Sunday 24th of October at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Golden Lane in Dublin for the second year. Hosted by Senator David Norris and Comedian Katherine Lynch, it features the crowning of the night’s Prom King and Queen and several buckets of glitter.
To mark the occasion Róisín Ingle asked members of Gaelick.com to pit the traditional debs against the all-new Gay Prom experience. Here’s the result:
