F-Off from FIFA
Money talks, we know it does, but sometimes it shouts loud homophobic crap in your face. Take the decision yesterday evening made by FIFA. The governing body of the beautiful game has, in its widsom, decided that Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup.
Fancy flying over to see Ireland maybe get through to the quarter-finals, if we maybe qualify? If so, be prepared for five years in prison after some flogging, such is the punishment for homosexuality in the Muslim country. Puts “going on the lash” in a new light.
You may be thinking that they wouldn’t put a foreigner on the stand, sure aren’t us Irish loved everywhere, and that’s true in a lot of Muslim countries. Qatar, however, doesn’t give a toss, they have lots of money so don’t need to kowtow to the whims of western democracy. Homosexuality, lesbianism and transsexuality are all punishable by Sharia Law.
So, yeah, thanks FIFA.
Soccer is immersed with racism and bigotry, and, although, they’ve worked hard to rid the terraces of racial slurs, queers are fair game. There have been some weak overtures by FIFA, but nothing concrete, nothing worthwhile and this just adds potential injury to the insult.

It’s pretty close to the be all and end all. Partly because there’s alot less to his Presidency than there was a year ago.
But mainly, the issue is critical because economic/fiscal fairness is a, perhaps the, core Democratic value. The party is firmly opposed to the concentration of wealth, because of the relative poverty and peonization that concentration means for everyone else. Also, as the party of government for the people, the Dems are the party of fiscal prudence. Don’t believe the pundits, look at history – we are the party of prudence, since we want a governemnt in a position to act.
It’s bad enough about Qatar, but by choosing Russia for 2018, it’s a double whammy. Homophobic states two years in a row! By choosing these two countries, FIFA have stymied the attempts to get professional football players to come out and have made it clear that they don’t care about LGBT fans.
Pep Guardiola (Bracalona manager) was an ambassador for Qatar’s bid and low and behold, today it turns out that Barcalona have signed a shirt sponsorship deal with “The Qatar Foundatain” worth around £125 million.
The Qatar Foundation is a non-profit organisation concerned primarily with education projects in the Middle East. According to the BBC, the foundation is chaired by the wife of a guy who was “central to Qatar’s final World Cup bid”

Football makes me quite sick, really: it’s not sport (anymore), it’s pure business.
Gross.
Gosh, if being given the two fingers by awarding the hosting of the World Cup to Qatar wasn’t bad enough:

@shirleybar: Here’s the video of Sepp Blatter of FIFA laughing at gay people & suggesting they not have sex in Qatar for the World Cup http://bit.ly/dWHNvy”
This is yet another reason to dislike Blatter. I’d say I’d lost respect for him but I didn’t have any to begin with
