I don’t mean to be rude girls…but your all sounding really, really vague about what you want in a night out. Ok, so the male gay nightclub experience doesn’t float your boat, so what does? Do you want cocktails, dance music, live music, strippers, dress code like leather…sorry a got a little carried away. Personally I like the George. My prefect all girl nightclub would be in a small venue so your forced to get up close and personal, pop/dance music like teisto and kylie, female dancers, cocktails and Belgium beers, darkly lit seating areas, Mr drag performances and perhaps the night would start off early for the single ladies with speed dating to get people talking because we all know lesbians are terrible for approaching each other until we are very drunk and then things get messy…ive said too much!

Agreed with Una: some of the nights really are quite poor. But some are or were great, really great vibe, great music but didn't get the crowd - why? Of course some were victims of their own success and the organisers just burned out but many didn't get support.

I guess we've some problems:

1. Frankly there is a lot of same old, same old on the scene. A lot of the same women at EVERYTHING - you try to escape but there's no hope. I'm trying to shake off people who starting hanging out of me in 1999 (this isn't a joke by the way - its a serious pain in the ****). But instead of some cute gurl who is there but everybody you DONT want to see!! Sure the clubs are good but if the same old stalker comes to everything you really just give up. I even went to Running Amach to try to escape from the stalkers but they just joined and appointed themselves as organisers so end of, simple.

2. Women are mean. Yes, they are. Sorry but many women won't pay for quality, even those who can well afford it.

3. Lastly, women tend not to express what they want. I think this makes it hard to second guess them.

Basically, I do think 2 kinds of events are good:

1. Fairly easy going, good venue, mixed music, mixed size, plenty of space, good vibe - attracting a broad mainstream crowd.

2. Secondly, there is a bit of demand for something a bit more exclusive - more expensive, get women with influence together and try to drive change.

Just my 2c.

I think Una has hit the nail on the head. The quality and focus of most lesbian nights is just to replicate the male clubbing experience. As she says, none of the events actively respond to the demands of lesbians who go out.

As a lesbian in my forties I'm not really interested in clubbing any more. My hobbies are music/concerts, film and eating out. Mostly done with family and non-gay friends. I would love to see some lesbian events around these.

I don't know why we don't have some kind of forum to screen women's movies and shorts. I personally have a huge collection, and I'm sure other people do too. I'd also like to go hear female musicians in an intimate setting. Also what about some kind of foodie/dinner club. One of the best events I went to in the past was a Boston Tea Party in the Pillar rooms organised by ALAF where everyone brought food for their tables of 8.

Come on gals, let's get inventive.

P.S. - Even the names of some of the lesbian nights are off-putting. "Pussy Wagon?" Really? (Makes me want to puke.)

Absolutely agree with Una, as well: motion carried!

Had a great night at FaKe (?) the other night, having neglected it for a bit. Defo will be supporting it again next month. Probably after a few drinks in the FLounge and/or PantiBar, etc.

I must also try out MissMatch, Muso - a couple of mates (while at FaKe) mentioned that they'd heard of it and suggested we all toddle along. Watch this space!

Y'know, I was thinking about this after reading your article yesterday and I think Una has hit the nail on the head.

Most lesbian nights are just men's nights for women. Which makes about as much sense as that sentence.

OK I'm in my 30s so most places aren't marketing to me; but when I think of the places I like to go, they are as far from The George-type as possible.

So what would your perfect women's night be? What music/venue/vibe would you pay for?

I'd agree with a lot of what Una says. Myself and a few friends checked out Pussy Wagon last Friday night but it did just feel like "the George as normal with a few extra lesbians"!!

One club I checked out in December seemed to be doing something right though - the place was heaving the night I went. I notice you omitted it in your list, so details below:

Miss-Match @ The ODESSA Club
Monthly Over 25s Night for Gay Women

Good music, great atmosphere and a nice chilled out venue (though perhaps a little too small). They have a group on Facebook which gives the date of the next night.

It's not about the quantity of nights, it's about the quality of them. The reason that a lot of lesbian nights fall flat is that they're just not very good. Most of them seem to me to be lazily thrown together and they don't seem to be actively responding to the demands of lesbians who go out.

Many lesbian nights just take the format of a gay clubbing experience (which is generally a male framework) and promote it to a lesbian crowd. You can't make a lesbian night happen simply by saying "this is a lesbian night"; what's the content of these nights, who are they aimed at, what's the music policy, what kind of extra entertainment is there, what kind of vibe is there; what's the venue about. Stuff like Pussy Wagon is basically The George as normal with a few extra lesbians. That's not actually a lesbian night!

Look at the nights and places lesbians have gravitated towards on the scene; the Front Lounge, The Hutch at Pantibar, Phromo (albeit almost exclusively for younger lesbians), Mother. These are the things dykes are actually going to, along with Cake/Electric Ballroom/Fake/Whatever it's called now, which is the only really decent more or less exclusively lesbian night on at the moment.

Maybe lesbians don't want the traditional gay clubbing experience with other lesbians and maybe that's why many of these so-called lesbian nights aren't working because they're not actually giving lesbians what they want. Most of my lesbian peers tend to prefer polysexual nights anyway so our gay male friends don't feel like they're being hauled to a girl's night.
