So much for the vow of chastity!

Coronation Street’s lesbian storyline burst on to our screens early last year and although it went through a slow patch, with other story lines being at the fore, it has been playing in the background consistently for some months now.  It’s great to see lesbianism dealt with on the soap, about time I hear you say, but what I like most about this story is the genuine protagonists it uses and the realistic reactions the characters have.

It was last April that Sophie went for it and kissed her best friend Sian.  A big step for her as she turned to religion in 2009 and refers to the bible as something which is very important to her.  The conflict she has within herself is well depicted when she is caught kissing Sian by their pastor.  The pastor meets with the girls the next day and starts reading from the bible and teaching that how they feel is something they must fight against.  Although Sophie seems to listen at first she just can’t take what he is saying on board as she knows what she feels for Sian is real.  The conversations they have are very well written and it’s great to see them included.  Sophie doubts her religion in a genuine way and you really feel for her.

Things took another interesting turn as Sophie and Sian have sex for the first time on New Years Eve, which for the record, is totally adorable.  Bearing in mind they both took a vow of chastity, Sophie even wearing a purity necklace, this was no small decision.  Of course in true soap style they were caught in bed by Sophie’s mother the second time they got it on, but you have to admire the way the storyline is dealt with, there is nothing gratuitous about it, it is all very sincere.

When Sophie is talking to her mother afterwards she accuses her of being mad she slept with another woman, not for having sex per say.  Her mother’s response is classic, saying no way was that it, although it does make it worse!

We have been told the characters relationship will be allowed blossom so I look forward to seeing what lies in store for the cutest teenagers on TV.

  • Seems like a vow of chastity is easier to keep when you are swearing of boys ;)

  • Thanks for the follow-up on this Corrie story, Gooner. I had also seen this storyline mentioned the other day on AfterEllen’s twitter account, too (and here).

I’m not a soap fan, but did have a rummage on YouTube this evening to see what all the fuss is about. (Very conveniently, one user – gq2010 – has edited down oodles of episodes into just the scenes concerning the baby dykes. Handy!)

I have to say, having watched a few from the Christmas/New Year’s clips, the programme has treated this plot really well, and the actors play it excellently. In fact, one of the things I liked best was (for the most part) how incidental their relationship is: just there, in the background, like all the other characters’ relationships.

    Well done, Corrie.

(P.S. – I do love, however, how AfterEllen predicts the character’s Sophie’s fate: “This is Coronation Street and Sophie is a Webster so it is unlikely that Weatherfield’s first lesbian will have an easy ride.” Ah, British soaps, you’ve got to love them…)
