First time for everything

Over the past few days we’ve had a poll on Gaelick asking you when you lost your virginity. We had a huge response. However, not one person commented. Are we all a bit shy?

The results were interesting in that most LGBT people are losing their virginity at a slightly older age than their straight counterparts. According to our poll, most of you popped your cherry between the ages of 18 and 25. According to this study by Durex the average age for hetero young people to have sex for the first time is 16.

So far, the results are:

  • 18 to 25 – 54%
  • under 18 – 22%
  • haven’t yet – 17%
  • 26 to 35 – 7%
  • over 35 – none

It’s funny, though, that no one commented on the poll. I include myself in that. I voted but didn’t comment. I had good reason though. I was a mortifying 25 when I had sex for the first time. Pure embarrassment at my lack of sexual activity kept me from letting everyone know.

So why didn’t you comment? Do you think you were too young/too old and were, like me, scarleh?

It’s interesting to look back on the first time. Do you regret it and wish you’d waited? Or regret it and wish you had said ‘yes’ that time when you were so close to it, but held back?

A lot of people cringe and the fumblings of their first, others grin at the innocence of it all. What do you think? Was it good for you?  It’s ok, you can comment, we’re all friends here.

  • I actually couldn’t answer. I got wrapped up in what it meant to lose my virginity and whether that’s even important.

Because what IS losing your virginity? I mean, as a teen I would have fooled around with guys a lot, but didn’t have full on sex. BUT if I’d been doing the same things with a girl as I was doing with those guys, would that be considered full on sex? And then, why is it different?

So yeah, couldn’t figure it out myself.

But the other part of it, I think, is that I thought I was genuinely uninterested in sex until I figured out I wasn’t straight — which was when I was 21. I would expect there are quite a few others like me in that way.

I guess if pressed, I would count the first time I slept with a woman, shortly after coming out. It was awesome, thanks for asking :)

  • I’m somewhere there with CanuckJacq, when referring to ‘Loosing your virginity’ what exactly is it that you mean? are we talking first sexual experience of any kind? First time of sexual intercourse with a man? Or first time having sex with a woman? all very confusing, never the less this did all happen pre 18 for me, and it was all very nice ta :P

  • I suppose it comes down to when you feel like you lost your virginity.

Many lesbians can have a very healthy sex live without ever having the ould hymen broken. One of my mates said that if that was the way to judge when you lost your virginity, she lost her’s to a horse. Ahem…..
