Perfectly groomed
A huge and hearty Gaelick congratulations to Barry Dignam and Hugh Walsh who got hitched recently, 17 years after they started dating. Yes kids, that’s before some of you made your communion. I’m sure being civilly partnerfied will be a big shock to the system as they start their life together. Isn’t it just ridiculous that homosexuality was a crime when they met? From criminals to nuptials in 20 short years. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take another 20 for them to be fully recognised as husbands.
I also take my figurative Philip Tracey design off to them for allowing themselves to be splayed across the Irish Times paper and website. It’s tough to put yourself out there for no good reason other than it’s the right thing to do.
I don’t in any way want to demean they relationship by making them into a PR specimen, but we need straights to see that we can stay together for more than a jiggle in the loos in the George. Especially men.
The stereotype is still rife that all we are after is sexual gratification, but heroes like Barry and Hugh show the world that we are, in no uncertain terms, just like everyone else.
It’s just a pity we don’t get the same rights as everyone else.
