Is feminism dead?

My answer to that questions is; is it arse? As long as women are treated differently, earn less and have to fight for reproductive rights, there will be women fighting the good fight. Ergo feminism.

On Saturday 19th of May, the Irish Feminist Network is holding a conference entitled Feminist Activism in Ireland: Past, Present and Future, hoping to, well, have a good look at where we are and what we need to do.

It promises to be one hell of an interesting day, with discussions and talks about contributions made by the Irish feminist movement in the past. Let’s be honest we don’t look back enough. Who said to examine the past is to learn for the future?

There are also to be discussions between generations of feminists, which is whetting my appetite.

There will be key note speeches by Mary Lou McDonald, TD and Deputy Leader of Sinn Féin and Salome Mbugua (left), CEO of African/Irish women’s group AkiDwA.

For more information, check out the website. Tickets are available here (scroll down the page a bit) and are €15.

  • Hi Ian – No! I wanted to go, and had signed up and all, but couldn’t go in the end. So disappointed about missing it.

Did anyone else go? Looked like such a great line-up.
