  • I personally find it really irritating that literally the only queer girl club type thing in Dublin has to be over 21s. I get that its your night and you get to make the rules, but for people just coming onto the scene like myself (I’m 18), I feel like we end up being totally excluded. I mean there’s War, but that’s mostly guys and straight girls.

Thats my complaining done, but I’d really like an 18s girls night. Please point me in the direction of one if it exists.

  • Hey Amy, I have to agree with you there – the legal age is 18, so it’s quite unfair that so many places are over 21s only.

(Although having a look at the BBC details above and on their facebook page, I don’t see any mention of that, so maybe they’ve changed the policy for this upcoming night?)

That’s interesting you should say that about WAR, though – I was there (for the first time!) a few weeks ago, and while they were in the minority, there were definitely queer girls there.

It’s a good question in general, though: where exactly do young, just out, queer women go??

  • They forget fairly often to put in the 21 thing(even more annoying). My friends showed up once after walking the whole way there to be told they were all too young.

It is really disappointing tbh. You wait all this time to be old enough to go places and no-one wants you! Don’t get me wrong, I love war, but although there are queer girls there, the times I’ve been there they’ve been outnumbered by guys and straight girls.

I don’t know, I just feel theres a huge gap in the market for girls who are just out on the scene who want a BBC type thing. I mean I guess the reasoning with BBC might be since its BYOB, they don’t want a load of younguns who can’t hold their drink, but still, where are all the queer girls between 18 and 20?!

  • Ah that’s so disheartening to be turned away like that! (Hope the night wasn’t ruined..) I do see that this next BBC has a bar (rather than it being BYOB), so I wonder is it a case that they just left out the over 21s, or is it actually over 18s this time?

I reckon you’re right about the gap in the market! Where is there to go, then, apart from pubs? (Actually that reminds me of this earlier post: http://www.gaelick.com/2012/06/gay-pubs-not-gay-clubs/25003/ ) Are you in any of the Belong To groups? Do the 18-20 girls there have the same issue, I wonder?

  • I was at belongto once a long time ago but I didn’t really fit in there. Atm I’m the one gay girl in a group of straight girls who though I love them to bits, are understandably not thrilled at my suggestions of gay clubs every weekend! :P Maybe its not so bad if you’re in a group of gay girls so you can bring them with you or something, but I’m kind of on my own in that respect. I suppose part A of the mission is make some gay friends before college!

I think they went somewhere else in the end and it was grand but after all the hassle in finding the place! I generally just end up at war, which isn’t ideal.

  • Aw, that’s a shame about belong to – you could try it again? (Disclosure: I’m totally biased, and am a big belongto fangirl.)

I’m the one gay girl in a group of straight girls

Oh noes! Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your friends are lovely, but that must be a bit of a pain at times! Hmm.. Well what about (brace yourself) non-pubby/clubby things?

Like some of the groups or events every now and then (outdoorsy stuff, volunteering, arty stuff)? There are loads on Facebook and who meet in Outhouse. College can be great, too – be sure to get stuck in, and don’t be shy!

  • I’m debating whether or not to chance the ladybirds group over the summer! I’ll keep an eye on the not pubby/clubby things! Would you know if they have anyone within my age group there?

Lol I’m going to join everything, college better be amazing. I’ve done my waiting, 12 years of it, IN AZKABAN.

Being the one lesbian in a crowd of straight girls can be a bit exhausting. ‘OMG So and so, look at that girl, she’s amazing!’ Everyone looks at me awkwardly and I just think about what I WOULD say, if anyone was there to talk with me about the amazing girl :P

    Amy said:
  • Oh do! Good idea – The Ladybirds could be better than the general group, maybe?

Hah!! Classic line! (I may steal it.)

Sure listen, best of luck with the Ladybirds and with college, and in fairness to your straight mates, they do sound like a supportive bunch – so props to them! I suppose, then, it’s just about broadening the social horizons further – and network, network, network! : )

  • Is Bitches be Crazy still running in Dublin?
If not can anyone reccommend a regular lesbian pub or club for a 25 year old!

  • Hey Jess,

I just put a wee shout-out on Twitter there, and one of the organisers got back to us and mentioned that BBC are on a bit of a summer break, but hope to be back soon!

    https://twitter.com/raginspice/status/243317183822835712

In the meantime, you can catch the original Bitches at their Come Rhyme With Me event in Outhouse next Wednesday as part of the Fringe Festival! More info here http://www.gaelick.com/tag/come-rhyme-with-me/ and here http://www.fringefest.com/programme/come-rhyme-with-me : )

Also, our calendar has a load of events listed that may tickle your fancy? (Though there may be things we haven’t included!) – http://www.gaelick.com/whats-on/

Someone else on Twitter suggested MeetUp.com is good for meeting people, especially for non-pub nights.

Let us know how you get on!
