Scottish Weddings Move Closer

Yesterday the Scottish government announced that they are planning to bring same sex marriage closer by bringing in legislation that would permit it under Scottish law.  Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement saying

We are committed to a Scotland that is fair and equal, and that is why we intend to proceed with plans to allow same-sex marriage and religious ceremonies for civil partnerships. We believe this is the right thing to do

The policy has the backing of all of the main parties in the country however there is strong opposition from the catholic church and the church of Scotland.

Convener of the Church of Scotland legal questions committee, Rev Alan Hamilton, said

We are acutely aware that opinions differ among our own members and that many people are anxious and hurt in the current situation.  We believe homophobia to be sinful and we reaffirm our strong pastoral commitment to all people in Scotland, regardless of sexual orientation or beliefs

Much more PC wording than the Catholic

The Scottish government is embarking on a dangerous social experiment on a massive scale.  We strongly suspect that time will show the Church to have been completely correct in explaining that same-sex sexual relationships are detrimental to any love expressed within profound friendships

Hard not to roll your eyes isn’t it, they are just so predictable.  However despite their opposition Scotland moves closer to equality in the wake of France doing likewise only recently.

Credit must go to all those in Scotland working hard on moving this issue forward, for example equalmarriage.org.uk have worked on campaigns and rallies have been held to publicise the issue.

Fair play to the government for moving forward despite such opposition, as I said, the move has cross party support and that is heartwarming indeed.  Lets hope our government follow suit.
