Review: Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same
On Earth, our beloved SUVs and cows are believed to be endangering our ozone layer.
On the planet Zots, “big feelings” are thought to be destroying the ozone layer, so any citizen experiencing “big feelings” is sent to Earth, where it is certain they will have their hearts broken and return to their planet sufficiently apathetic to not be a danger to the atmosphere because Earthlings are presumably assholes. Fortunately for everyone involved (including us!), things do not go as planned.
When you’re handed a film with an amazing title like Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, it’s tempting to believe the best gag is the title. That’s not the case with this at all.
Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, written and directed by Madeleine Olnek, follows three aliens on Earth and one human, Jane, who has fallen in love with the alien known as Zoinx (hilariously played by Jane Zeigler).
While the alien costumes aren’t convincing, the B-plot is confusing (not so much I-don’t-follow, but more why?), and the “alien language” and names are pure cheeseball, the movie, as a whole, is completely delightful. Lisa Haas plays lovable but alone Earthling Jane, who spends a lot of time defending her alien fantasies to her therapist, who insists it’s a form of escapism.
Among the things I will never look at the same again are revolving dessert trays, the ocean, clap-on-clap-off lamps, and every lesbian protagonist ever, not played by Lisa Haas.
Like all the best sci-fi, here you’ll find incise social commentary dished up with cheesy costumes and aliens who don’t understand our odd social conventions.
Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this film. It would make a pretty epic date film, but don’t let that limit you. No matter who you share this experience with, you’ll laugh (and dance) inappropriately. Pro tip: have cheesecake at the ready.
Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same is available on DVD from Peccadillo Pictures from today.
