Álainn or Appallin’: Sarah Paulson
I wanted to start watching American Horror Story when it started with it’s initial run called Murder House, but I was too much of a wuss. You see I can’t watch scary things, I can’t turn off my empathy and just see it as a TV show or a movie, I just get upset for the person. However, when the show’s second season, Asylum, was getting rave reviews I started to think that perhaps I should give it a go. Then I learnt that bisexual actress Sarah Paulson was playing a lesbian reporter who was put into the asylum for being gay and I though ok Gooner, get a grip, you have to watch this.
Gooner is a wuss!
So I did, and I had to get up at 3am after watching episode 1 to put the light on in my bedroom, but I persevered and now I know what all the hype was about. The acting is simply amazing, Jessica Lange is so good it’s disconcerting and James Cromwell is stunning. They bring the show to life along side actors of the caliber of Joseph Fiennes, Lily Rabe and Sarah’s new BBF Zachary Quinto. For me, Sarah’s performance was worthy of all of the award nominations and the critics choice award win. Great to see an out LGBT actor getting Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for playing gay.
Sarah’s portrayal of Lana Winters, in American Horror Story: Asylum is full of underplayed emotion. She is stoic but you can see the sense of panic at her complete loss of control. To say her character is disempowered would be an understatement. Lana feels betrayed and so she should, but Sarah never lets Lana look pitiful or lost, you really want her to survive and hold her own.
Paulson is an actress with a very long and impressive resume. Born in Florida, she grew up in Brooklyn and Maine and got her acting break when she appeared in an episode of Law & Order in 1994. The next year she got noticed when she played a ghost, Merlyn Temple, in American Gohtic. Over the next few years Sarah appeared in TV Movies as well as several TV shows such as Nip/Tuck and Grey’s Anatomy but it was in 2006 when she appeared in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip that she hit it big. The show garnered Paulson her first Golden Globe nomination, a feat she repeated in 2012 for Game Change, that show also saw Paulson on the short list for an Emmy. Sarah also appeared in the 2012 movie Mud and the recent highly acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave. She has also signed up to play Cordelia Foxx, a teacher and daughter to Jessica Lange, in American Horror Story: Coven. (Coven premiers in the States on October 9th)
Paulson openly dated actor Cherry Jones (24, Awake) for five years and has stated that she is open to a future relationship with either a man or a woman. She has said that she has not been in a relationship since she and Jones broke up in 2009, so there you go ladies, she’s single. I love the end of this little interview when she talks about kissing Jones when she won a Tony Award.
