SPIOLER ALERT - Once Upon a Time Season 3 episode 3
Those of you who acquire Once Upon a Time after it airs in the states will know that episode three has a heart breaking scene where Mulan (Jamie Chung) went to talk to Aurora (Sarah Bolger) and it was obvious to all it was to tell her that she had romantic feelings towards her. Now I’m not talking subtext shipping here, I’m talking text text. Not that anyone was surprised, it seems obvious the writers would try to appease SwanQueen shippers with another lesbian/bi character in the show and Mulan and Aurora were the easiest pick having shared some moments in season 2.
Even Snow herself loved it:
This got me thinking, how many other screamers are Disney hiding?
END OF SPOILER
Hugo and Djali (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
You think this is a weird pick? Actually it’s possibly the most authentic as in the book Djali is a woman. I know they are a gargoyle and a goat but this is animation, get those imaginations out. There is genuine affection between these characters and in the sequel you could even say they get a happy ending. Live happily ever after boys.
I thought *I* was the cute one!
Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
I know my fellow Once Upon a Time fans will see this and think Belle and Ruby and right you are, however, lets just look at Belle from the Disney film for a minute. She has zero interest in finding a man to take care of her. She loves to read books and imagines a better life for herself. She can see past a persons physicality to the soul beneath. She is a gay lady!
I want adventure in the great wide somewhere. / I want it more than I can tell. / And for once it might be grand / To have someone understand / I want so much more than they’ve got planned…
Governor Ratcliffe (Pocahontas)
And don’t think I don’t know what those back stabbers at court say about me.
Being the first female Disney character to be the lead character in a film doesn’t make you gay but Merida kicks ass and I’d like to think that points in the direction of a lady lover. I know she’s 14 but we all were once and Merida shoots arrows with the best of them. You go girl.
I am Merida, and I’ll be shooting for my own hand.
Ursula the Sea Witch (The Little Mermaid)
Disney based their animation of Ursula on famous drag queen Divine and she is a women to be reckoned with that’s for sure. She wants to have Ariel all to herself and although she’s a baddy through and through she’s one of us ladies, no question.
You’ll have your looks… your pretty face… and don’t underestimate the importance of “bo-dy lan-guage.” Ha!
I just had to include the Genie, he’s my kind of guy. Originally a slave, Genie gains his freedom but not before sweeping us all off our feet. He is loyal, witty and loves to help his friends in time of need. He is also a know it all when it comes to pop culture – remind you of anyone you know?
Oh, Al. I’m gettin’ kinda fond of you, kid. Not that I wanna pick out curtains or anything.
