Swedish couples banned from adopting Russian children
In continuation of Russia’s staunch opposition to ‘homosexual propaganda’ Russian authorities have introduced a ban on Swedish couples attempting to adopt Russian children on the grounds that same-sex marriage is legal in Sweden. The ban is effective against all Swedish couples, regardless of whether they are same-sex or opposite-sex. This follows a court decision in Russia which disallows any country from adopting Russian children if that country recognizes same-sex unions or allows same-sex parented adoptions. Russia will now seek legal agreements with those countries that only heterosexual couples will be permitted to adopt.
“The perverts? No, it is unacceptable. Homosexuals are ‘perverts’ and should absolutely not be allowed to adopt children… Children who grow up in that kind of environment are destroyed psychologically.”
Russia’s current stance on homosexuality equates homosexuality with perversion and child abuse but an overall xenophobia and desire to differentiate Russia from other Western European cultures might be just as strong a motivation. Foreign Russian adoptions to the US were stopped last year without much warning and the Russian territory of Kemerovo has voted to outlaw all foreign adoptions of Russian children. The fact that Kemerovo has been referred to as ‘the first’ rather than ‘the only’ territory in the Russian Federation to make such a move speaks volumes about Russia’s current relationship with the outside world.
