Herself and hubby, Carey, were relaxed and chatty with everyone until word got out and a stampede of lesbians trampled across the Capel St bridge to have a gaze and a lick (possibly).

Anyway, this is the perfect moment to explain to you why we love P!nk. And by “you” I mean those of you who won’t be in Ballsbridge this weekend or who didn’t momentarily consider joining the stampeding lesbians in Dublin City centre.

She’s kind, generous and down to earth

There are no airs or graces about her. She’s happy joining a cycling tour of Amsterdam with other tourists, motorbiking up to Johnnie Fox’s for lunch or getting her groove on in a lesbian nightclub in Sydney.

She loves having fun and doesn’t let anything stop her! She’s a supporter of PETA and donated $250,000 to aid the victims of the bushfires in Australia last year.

She’s strong and doesn’t conform
She goes out without make-up, she cuts her hair short, she’s not afraid to go against the grain.
Examples of this include telling her first record producer that she wasn’t going to change her image to sell records, snubbing Prince William after he requested she perform at his 21st birthday party, releasing a song about her displeasure at George Bush and including her ex-husband in the video of the song she wrote about their break-up!

Her voice
It can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. She never lip synchs, even when she is hanging upside down from the ceiling, trapezing or spinning around in the air while drenched in water.

She is one of the few artists of her genre who is supremely better live than she is on her albums and her albums are by no means poor! You can hear the emotion and the passion when sings. She believes in what she’s saying which means you do too.

She’s beautiful
She’s got wonderful eyes, a mischievous grin, a sexy laugh and anything else you could want.

American figure-skater Johnny Weir is an extrovert both on and off the ice, and it shows. However, his flamboyant costumes have sparked homophobic comments from some media quarters, with Channel Nine in Australia referring to Weir's outfit being "very Brokeback Mountain". They have been made apologise.

‘Every little boy should be so lucky as to turn into me’

That was Olympic figure-skater Johnny Weir’s response to the homophobic remarks made by commentators from the French-language RDS network and Australia’s Channel Nine; both stations have since issued apologies. The Quebec Council of Gays and Lesbians (CQGL) have filed a complaint against RDS with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council over the remarks made by Alain Goldberg and Claude Mailhot.

“This may not be politically correct,” Mailhot noted. “But do you think he lost points due to his costume and his body language?” His colleague Goldberg replied, “They’ll think all the boys who skate will end up like him … It sets a bad example.” (Johnny Weir is known for the outfits which he designs himself; they often include pink ribbons and sequins.) After mentioning athlete Caster Semenya’s forced gender test it was suggested that Weir should also undergo the test.

The 25 year-old skater held a news conference on Wednesday in which he reacted to the comments aswell as those made by Eddie McGuire and comedian Mick Molloy from Channel Nine in Australia which referred to Weir’s outfit being “very Brokeback Mountain”. In the news conference Weir stated:

“I’m totally for freedom of speech and voicing your opinion, so I can’t, like, have them fired. I’ve heard worse in bathrooms about me. It’s not a big issue for me that they said it. I just didn’t want other kids to have that same issue.”

When asked why he hasn’t clarified the matter of his sexuality or be “more explicit about where you fit in in that sort of broader continuum”, he replied:

“The reason that I am not explicit with who or what I sleep with is because I don’t think it should matter … I want people to see me for who I am, not what I am. What somebody is has no basis in my life. That’s my personal conviction.

“I don’t think there’s anything that anybody has to be completely ‘out and about’ about. I think you should be ‘out’ about being yourself.”

Weir finished in 6th place in the competition and it has since been reported that Channel Nine have invited Weir to join their team covering the remainder of the Winter Olympics.

The last word from Weir himself via his twitter page?

Why can’t we all just get along? Seriously? Love everyone like they deserve to be loved. Goodnight lovers.

Ireland are in Paris tonight hoping to overturn a one goal deficit to book their place in next summer's FIFA World Cup 2010 being hosted by South Africa. It's a cliched "must-win" game for the Irish who have at least 90 minutes to make an impression on the sophisticated French side. All TVs will be tuned to RTE 2 tonight!

Tonight, twelve teams battle it out for the six remaining places in the FIFA World Cup which is taking place in South Africa in 2010. One of those places could belong to Ireland which would mean France (who won the competition for their first and only time in 1998) would miss out on qualification for the first time since USA 94′. Ireland on the other hand are hoping to make their fourth finals, their previous best being the Quarter-Finals in Italia ’90 when they lost to hosts Italy.

With a solitary French away goal at Croke Park being the difference going into this evening’s game, all is not lost (despite the fact that, competitively, France are unbeaten at the Stade de France since 1999!). There is however, much to do and very little room for lapses in concentration. If we can score early on, that French goal will effectively be cancelled out by our own away goal. From there on, the pressure will be on France not to concede another while at the same time pressing for a win themselves. If the score tonight is 1-0 to us, then the game will be decided on penalties as both teams have the same number of “away” goals (goals scored at the opposition’s ground over a two-legged tie). If we do score first there is a chance Trappatoni will try to defend and hope for penalties which is entirely possible but makes no room for error. I’d like to see us push for a second in that case and get the second away goal which means France would need to score twice to get through at our expense!

Trappatoni has hinted that he will start with the same eleven that kicked off at Croke Park on Saturday night. This means no room for Hunt and McGeady in the starting line-up, two of our more direct attacking players. A lot will be expected of our defence and midfield who will have to work tirelessly to keep the French out and break up attacks respectively. If Damien Duff and Robbie Keane can link up like they have done in the past there is a chance of goals against an experienced French back line (Abidal will sit this leg out with a thigh injury). I do still feel that the lack of creative spark in midfield is holding us back in the games where we struggle to make an impact, a creative spark such as Stephen Ireland or dare I say it, Andy Reid!

Thierry Henry says he does not expect the Irish team to be out for revenge tonight after Lassana Diarra’s comments to Keith Andrews that the Irish dream was at an end. There were heated exchanges after the final whistle on Saturday night and frankly it can only be a good thing going into tonight’s game. If there’s anything the Irish don’t like, it’s being written off before they’ve had the chance to show what they are made of. Expect a passionate display that surprises the French and hopefully gives us the chance to play in South Africa next summer!

The other qualifiers tonight (first-leg score):
Bosnia-Herzegovina v Portugal (0-1)

Slovenia v Russia (1-2)

Ukraine v Greece (0-0)

Algeria v Egypt

Uruguay v Costa Rica (1-0)

Tonight’s game kicks off at 8pm Irish time and coverage begins on RTE 2 television at 7.20pm as well as being available on RTÉ Radio 1 FM, LW 252, DAB and RTÉ.ie from 7.30pm.

Who is the woman this time? Only the newest judge on American Idol, Ellen! Back in March, Oprah invited Ellen to join her on the front cover of the Christmas edition of O magazine by surprising her on the set of Ellen’s tv show. Of course, Ellen being Ellen came up with a multitude of ideas on how the cover should look, including one which appeared to show them both half-naked popping out of a Christmas box. Sadly, this one didn’t quite make the cut but a total of four different covers have been shot especially for the holiday edition of O. See all four at oprah.com or have a look behind the scenes at the photoshoot.
The magazine should be available in Easons just in time for Christmas!

P!nk was back in Dublin for two sold-out nights at the O2 Arena in Dublin and will be back next year for a few open-air shows. Fans camped out overnight at the venue to make sure they got as close as possible to Her P!nkness but some were disappointed in the setlist and wondered why two Funhouse songs were replaced with earlier songs. A few mentioned that the show was more like a A Greatest Hits concert.

P!nk arrived back in Dublin on Wednesday morning for two more sold-out shows at the O2 (The Point) before moving on to Belfast. This is the second-leg of the Funhouse tour, similiar but not quite identical to the shows she put on here in April. The set-list was slightly different, out went Ave Mary A and Crystal Ball and in came Stupid Girls and Dear Mr. President. Just quite why the latter was brought back is anyone’s guess, it’s no longer relevant and P!nk herself said she would no longer perform it after Obama’s inaugeration earlier this year. If anything was disappointing it was when one of her dancers took to the trapeze for Sober while P!nk herself sang from the stage. She never mentioned why that was but she did end the show with Glitter in the Air and the acrobatics that went with that (being dipped in water and then spinning around all while dangling from a piece of material!) . Another theme to the show was cheese! She spent about 3 minutes speaking of her love for it and the fact that she hadn’t eaten any all day. Of course, the following night provided ample opportunity for fans to throw dozens of types of cheese onto the stage. P!nk promptly told the security guard to put it in the fridge for her.!

Vocally, she was on form as always and Bohemian Rhapsody was a particular highlight even for those in attendance who were admittedly not huge fans of P!nk. Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” is given a huge boost by her vocals and the energy she generates spreads throughout the crowd and lasts to the very note of the nearly two hour set. For the fans disappointed in the changes to the show, they might be pleased to hear that her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour will be visiting Ireland in June next year. The dates are: King’s Hall – Belfast on the 16th June, The RDS Arena – Dublin on the 19th June and Thomand Park, Limerick on the 20th June 2010. Tickets go on sale next Friday the 23rd October at 9am from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide. Dublin and Limerick prices are €58.30 general admission and €63.20 seated. The DVD of the Funhouse Tour “Live From Sydney” will be released in Ireland as a CD/DVD double-pack on the 30th October 2009.

Toscana is one of those places. You know the ones, after your first bite you wonder why you have never been there before. The charming (Italian handsome) waiters, the delightful decor, the Italian opera playing faintly in the background gives the impression of lazy summer days on Piazza Navona eating Pistachio ice-cream. The whole experience is a joy.

We arrived early (5.30ish) to an empty but welcoming restaurant. The staff were professional, seemed busy, and avoided the awful habit of jumping on the first customers that arrive at the door. We were brought in and allowed to choose our table. The seats were comfortable even if the tables were slightly too close to the next ones, not conducive to private conversation!

The Early Bird/Pre-Theatre menu is priced at e17.95 per person but the main course selection is tiny bit limited for my tastebuds (salmon, lasagne, pasta and chicken!) so we moved on to the A La Carte menu. This is composed of starters to suit most palates including soup, salad, meat, bread and seafood. We opted to share a Crostini starter which arrived a reasonable few minutes later. Thick bread, piping hot and fresh, smothered in tomato and mozzarella cheese, cut in two with ground black pepper = scrumptious. For the mains I went for Filetto di Manzo, charcoal-grilled medallions of fillet steak. It was served with a garlic & herb butter on the side and a generous portion of mixed salad with dressing. The meat itself was cooked just as I had ordered and the salad was crispy fresh. My partner order a pizza with a variety of topppings, it arrived piping hot and I’m assured it was just as tasty as it looked. We were so full that we skipped dessert even though the Apple and Cinnamon Crumble was very appealing!

Our bill came to just under 50 euro (no service charge included) and it seemed very decent for the quality of the organic food we had just consumed. As we were leaving we noticed that the place had become quite busy with plenty of couples, groups and families. It’s a popular spot and not diificult to see why. The food, price and service are just right. Toscana is definitely worth your tastebuds, whatever the occasion.

Just in case you are one of the few who haven’t been drawn into the crazy world that belongs to Lady Gaga (and to her alone, it seems) then I invite you to read on. The Lady Gaga world is an incredibly well manufactured product, from the crazy videos (see Paparazzi) to the bizarre interviews( see Johnathan Ross), the ridiculous get-ups (any photo) to the polished beats, synths and vocals on “The Fame”.

Gaga’s debut album promises a great deal after the singles “Pokerface” and “Paparazzi” became entwined in the synapses of every pop fan’s brain due to the huge amount of airplay. “Just Dance” was the first single, the song which, I won’t say “catapulted” (the video has been on youtube since May 2008!) directed an increasing amount of attention to The Lady Gaga world. It’s catchy with a killer beat and fills the floor, what more can you ask for, eh Madonna?

The rest of the album blows hot and cold. “Love Game” opens with the lyric “Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick”. If you haven’t smashed your cd player/iPod at this point then you’ll enjoy a smooth, laid-back clubbing vibe. This laid-back clubbing vibe continues over a few tracks and begins to get a bit wearisome. Oddly interspersed at Track 6 is Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) which is something that might have been borne of a mating between Ace of Base and The Vengaboys, very europop. “Brown Eyes” is a suprising addition, a piano-led ballad which still can’t escape the beat and the synth and makes for an intriguing but welcome mix.

On first listen, the album is very enjoyable but after the third listen it begins to sound too repetitive. We are already very well accustomed to Gaga’s best writing (the singles) and if you like those then go ahead and get the album. If, however, you like the singles because you have no choice in the matter then maybe give this one a miss. No matter which side of the fence you’re on the Lady Gaga machine is well-oiled and will be around for a while yet!

Lady Gaga’s album, “The Fame” is available on 7digital now and all good record stores.

P!nk's fourth video from her Funhouse album gets a mixed reception from fans. It's too short? Too boring? Not enough going on? Watch and see what you think. The single will be released on the 21st August in Ireland.

Her fourth single from Funhouse is the title track. It’s about Since it’s emerged that herself and her not so ex-hubby (they were never offically divorced) Carey Hart are back in love and perhaps even renewed their wedding vows, what do her break-up and heartache songs mean to her? “…it’s still silly, it’s still funny, I still have anger. It’s really easy to just be right back there. … I don’t have a hard time transplanting myself straight back to that moment.”

The video for Funhouse premiered this afternoon on Channel 4 and the immediate reaction from her fans was mixed with many pointing out that the syncing in the video was slightly off and the song was cut short with a chorus removed from the end. One thing everyone can agree on is that she is still as hot as ever (and loving the fauxhawk!). What do you think?

Sarah Waters is a lesbian book-lover’s dream; not only is she a hell of a writer but she’s as out as a person can be. As a result we have five books which, had she been a lesser writer and just a lezzer writer, would be in our library but not the mainstream. With Sarah, lesbian culture is brought to the wider world.

She has, with Emma Donoghue, shown the straight world that lesbians existed in history, that our stories are just as fascinating, just as rich as theirs. Her writing is just too good to stay on the margins.

At the moment Sarah Waters is on a crazy world-wide publicity tour. She’s flying from city to city, taxiing from hotel to hotel to try to do as many interviews as possible. Everyone wants to meet her and she’s just too nice to say no. Annie Aura met her in a Dublin hotel and asked her some pertinent questions.

The Little Stranger is about Dr Faraday, a country doctor in middle England of the 1940s. As the book begins, he remembers as a child being brought by his mother into the local ‘big house’, Hundreds Hall, were she works among the dozens of maids. He is bewitched by the splendour of the place, the moulded crevices, luxurious furniture, long hallways. It’s a million miles away from the home he shares with his lower-class parents, parents who work their fingers to the bone to get him educated.

Years later, our narrator is initially excited to be called to the Hall to see to their solitary maid who is ill. When he drives up the long driveway, it’s clear that things have changed. Just as Faraday has risen in the ranks of society, Hundreds has fallen into disrepair.

Faraday gradually becomes a friend of the family, an odd bunch of characters made up of Rod and Caroline Ayres and their mother. This trio have been holed up in their crumbling mansion for years, desperately trying to hold back the imminent erosion.

As Faraday becomes a part of the family, he realises that all is not well. He may have arrived to cure the maid, but he ends up treating Rod and slowly realising that the house itself is sick. A sort of cancer has infected it and it’s determined to spread its disease to its inhabitants.

There has been a lot said about the fact that there are no lesbians in it, but I disagree. If you read Dr Faraday as a woman, it’s lezbalicious. His/Her relationship with Caroline is gay if you ask me, as Waters has used all of the old code words in describing her. She is ‘handsome’, ‘slightly masculine’, doesn’t wear make-up or shave her legs. Hello?

The Little Stranger is, at its most basic, a ghost story. But, this being Waters, there is much more going on. There are layers and layers of meaning. Hundreds Hall represents the end of the gentry class in post-war England. As it erodes, the social divisions become blurred – maids who lived in slums are now buying houses on the grounds which have been developed into housing estates.

The Ayreses have no idea how to live in this world. They hold onto the final strands of the old life, all the while wishing they could just live. Hundreds Hall is killing them with its financial demands, and the social shame of its disrepair is suffocating. Caroline, particularly, wants out. She is tired of watching the house kill her brother and is terrified of the same things happening to her.

Annie Aura put this to Sarah.

AA: In each of your books there is a recurring theme of characters being trapped in some fashion, wanting to get out of their current situation. In The Little Stranger, Dr. Faraday wants to get into Hundreds Hall and Caroline wants to get out.

SW: *laughs* I get asked about this quite a lot because they are often sort of prisons, you know, either real metaphorical prisons or…and I don’t really know why. I think it’s simply that it’s more interesting, it’s an interesting thing to write about.

People are trapped and there’s that kind of conflict, it makes for a more interesting story. I suppose because I’m interested in other sorts of prisons like gender and sexuality and class and, you know, how they confine people so maybe it’s something like that.

The Little Stranger is a great read. It’s much breezier than its predecessor, The Night Watch which was quite ponderous and melancholy. However, one thing you are always guaranteed with a Sarah Waters book is a great story. She has the natural gift of a fireside seanchaí, slowly drawing you into her world and seducing you with her story. Her attention to the details; social, sexual, and physical make every story believeable. Even a ghost story.

AA: Your style of period story-telling is characterised by meticulously faithful attention to detail in the universe you create for your characters. How long does it take you to familiarise yourself as an author with the vernacular, the environment and mundanities of the time and places in which your characters live? And what is your process for doing so?

SW: For this book and the one before it, because they were both set in the 40s I read a lot of 40s fiction, watched a lot of 40s films and read diaries from the period. That was a really great way of getting into the idiom of the period. To be honest, research is an ongoing process for me.

AA: In your second novel, Affinity, a supernatural thread ran through the story. It’s a theme which you have returned to in The Little Stranger. Have ghost stories or tales of the supernatural held a particular fascination for you?

SW: Yeah, they have, always. Even when I was a child I read a lot of ghost and horror stories. To be honest I’m pretty skeptical about the supernatural. I think on the whole it’s wishful or something on people’s parts.

I’m interested in the hold it has over us and I like the idea that there’s another world that maybe occasionally kind of leaks into our world. I really enjoyed writing a proper haunted house novel with this book and I’d like to write more ghost stories in the future.

So what does the future hold for our dream writer?

AA: Have you already thought about your next project or are you just enjoying time off from writing?
SW: I have a couple of ideas but I haven’t really worked on them yet as it’s very hard to do when you are travelling and doing interviews and talks. So at the moment, I’m not really thinking about that.

As for the future of the book, The Little Stranger, you an bet your bottom euro that it’ll be developed for the screen. It’s begging for it, with dark corners, mysterious ailments and a bewildered protagonist. Waters’ previous work has proven popular with TV audiences, not just for the hot lesbian action which thrilled us and disgusted The Mirror in equal measure.

AA: Of all the dramatised versions of your novels, which one most accurately reflects the book as you intended it?

SW: Interesting question! *looks away and ponders* Fingersmith, yeah, without a doubt. *smiles*

No argument here. It’ll be interesting to see what they can do with The Little Stranger. Here’s hoping they make Dr Faraday female. Look, I can dream

Mothering Sunday was originally a Sunday in the middle of Lent in which young people who had left home went back to their “mother church” for mass. This meant that they would see their family and they would often pick flowers along the route to give to their mother. This gradually evolved into the day we celebrate today.

I never used to take the celebration seriously. It was something that meant normal lessons in school were replaced with an afternoon of art where we could make a mess and have fun making lists of words to rhyme with “mum”. All the while peeling a film of glue from our hands (the 80s equivalent of having fun on the Wii).

Throughout my teenage years I would buy a card and flowers/chocolates/plant/diary, whichever I could afford. I’d hand them to my mam, give her a hug and bring her breakfast in bed. It was mostly a formality, this was what you did on Mother’s Day and it’s only lately that I’ve come to realise how important Mothering Sunday actually is.

When I came out to my own mother a couple of years ago she was incredibly supportive from the very moment I uttered those words that had been spinning around in my head for years. She took it all in her stride and life carried on as normal. When she came to the realisation that her marriage was over, she carried on through the turmoil. Through numerous hospilizations, two serious car accidents and the sudden death of her father she kept going and came through it all a more mature and reflective person. Nothing fazes her. I look back on these times and feel guilty for my childish obstinance which lasted longer than it should and could have. I owe her so much for helping me become who I am today that I feel as though I can never repay her. I think that’s a feeling we all share.

Some of us never knew our mother, some of us didn’t get on and the relationship was broken, some of us lost her far too early. Some of us see our mother every day but rarely spend time with her. Whatever our circumstances, Mammy will be at the forefront of our thoughts today.

Happy Mother’s Day!

She’s really churning them out this time around. The video for her next single* “Please Don’t Leave Me” has been premièred on msn. P!nk is still an angry lady by the looks of it. Brandishing a golfclub over the bed of her lover (ex-lover?) she seems to have channelled Kathy Bates. To me the song deserves an emotional and honest video but she’s decided instead to go for twisted comedy. I don’t think I’ll be watching it too much but what do you think?

Gaelick Extra:
P!nk and Carey Hart Back Together?

According to the Brisbane Times Carey Hart has moved into her Malibu home. “Pink is head over heels for Carey and wants to try it again, but she is proceeding cautiously. They just took a break on the marriage because they couldn’t make it work never seeing each other. She never gave up hope that it would work.” Odd considering that she only recently told Ellen that herself and Carey would never get back together.

*The single is set for release in Australia but is expected as the third release in most other countries although unconfirmed as yet.

We all love P!nk and it seems quite a few of us expect her to pop out of the closet this year. Here are 5 reasons why she won't be doing any such thing.

No related posts.

According to a poll on www.lesbilicious.co.uk, P!nk is the number one straight crush for UK lesbians. 31% of those who took part in the poll also said they expected P!nk to come out this year. Well, I have some news. She won’t and here’s why:

1. She’s not a lesbian.
Simple really. “I’m not gay so I guess I would not try a relationship with a woman. I didn’t say I haven’t experimented but I love men too much to make it a permanent thing.” When questioned by Q magazine back in 2004 she said: “Women like to talk about everything, way too much sh… If I was with a woman I’d be the guy in the relationship. Like, Come on, shut up!“.

2. She’s hates labels.
When Diva magazine asked her if she was bisexual or queer she told them that she didn’t believe in labels but does believe that everyone is trisexual. Hmmm…

3. She loves being a tease.
And we love her even more because of that. How else do you explain this:

4. She would have come out by now.
P!nk is brutally honest with her fans. She has no problem with how people perceive her. And If she did come out as a lesbian it wouldn’t affect her record sales.

5.She loves boy bits too much.
In an interview back in September she was asked what she missed most about her ex, Carey. Her answer? “I really loved my husband’s penis. It was really pretty.”

I rest my case.

(By the way, P!nk, if you’re reading this, feel free to prove me wrong. I’d only be too delighted.)

Alexandra won the X Factor after an incredible duet with Beyonce but it's her version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah that has people talking. Can it exist alongside Jeff Buckley's classic?

No related posts.

When I hear the whispered chorus of Hallelujah I begin to shiver and small droplets of sweat begin to form on my temples. My breathing becomes shallow and my hands tense up and I grip onto the nearest piece of solid furniture. Why? Not because I’m listening to the X Factor’s Alexandra Burke’s version but because it reminds me of when I was on a plane full of people who joined hands and sang mournfully while our plane dived, bumped and rattled over the church-like Alpine peaks. It was comparative to being in a film where the characters have realised their unfortunate fate and the music creeps in to accompany their feelings until their ultimate demise (or the credits, whichever arrives sooner).

Ever since then I’ve done my utmost to avoid listening to anybody sing Hallelujah. Until the X Factor went and ruined it all. JLSVWxy were on on stage to perform their final track of the show and at first I didn’t recognise the opening chords ( I thought it was REM “Everybody Hurts”, how apt that would have been!). My girlfriend threw her mung beans at the tv and shouted “No! Murderers!”. I then decided I was going to enjoy this version of whatever it was.

“I heard there was a secret chord….”

It opened up to me in a new way, how or why I don’t know. I listened to this awful version but something held my attention (possibly the gorgeous eyes of the wonderfully named Aston Merrygold). It finished to a torrent of curses from Captain Haddock beside me and then Alexandra appeared on stage to perform a beautiful soulful version. I got goosebumps.

Poor Alexandra has managed to poke the ants’ nest with this cover and all the musical snobs have come crawling out. There is a group on facebook encouraging people to download Buckley’s Hallelujah to stop Alexandra’s being Number 1 for Christmas. How nasty. I find Jeff’s version too whiny and ethereal for my liking. Just because you can hit all the notes doesnt mean you have to. I would consider versions by Rufus and Damian Rice to be similiar in that respect. They just don’t cut it for me.

Hundreds of artists have covered the track and the style varies enough for everybody to have a favourite version. Some truly awful ones include those by Bono and Bon Jovi (ironic considering “bon” means “good”). Bono tries to interpret it in his own way and makes a mockery of the whole atmosphere that most artists manage to retain regardless of how tone deaf they are. Bon Jovi just massacre it. John Cale is the man who decided to take the original and throw it over his shoulder, I can see its appeal but my favourite aspect of that is the beautiful string arrangement.

Bob Dylan’s you will either love or hate. Sheryl Crow? Don’t even bother. KD Lang? One of the best. In my eyes (or ears?) Leonard Cohen’s original will always be the greatest. It’s warm and he delivers the lyrics the way they were written to be delivered. His avoids the sacred distance that every other cover maintains from its meaning.

Here’s a few others, good and bad that you may have missed.

Britney got her birthday celebrations underway in London on Saturday when she popped into iconic gay club Heaven after her X-Factor appearance (I can’t say performance). At the Britney themed night, she was presented with a birthday cake iced to look like her new album cover. She then packed her trunk and said goodbye to the Circus to catch a plane in time for her appearance on Good Morning America.

Yet another study has appeared with findings that suggest common traits of left-handedness and directional hair whorling in gay men.

Tuesday 2nd December

The Cosmopolitan, the first Irish programme targeting a gay audience was launched as part of RTE’s new digital platform. Featuring gay community news and infromation plus dance music, the show will air every Wednesday evening on RTE Pulse. RTE Choice will also air This Way Out , an international radio show for the gay community on Saturday nights.

Wednesday 3rd December

Mary Beth Maxwell could become America’s first openly gay cabinet member. President-elect Barack Obama has shortlisted Maxwell to lead the Dept of Labour in his government. According to American press, her election would be a long shot purely due to the fact that she is not as well known as other names on the short-list. “Ms. Maxwell clearly understands that the challenges facing our workforce must be solved by including all American citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” wrote Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign.

Thursday 4th December

Ellen de Generes’ ex Anne Heche is expecting her first child with partner James Tupper. The 39 year old already has a son from her marriage to Coleman Laffoon. Anne and Ellen were together from 1997 to 2000.

Britain’s homosexual population will be counted when statisticians question the public in a range of surveys. The Office for National Statistics say that the questions will help identify areas of discrimination against minorities. “Heterosexual/straight”, “Gay/Lesbian”, “Bisexual” and “Other” are the categories from which answers can chosen. The question does not have to be answered and can be declined.

Friday 5th December

Sir Terry Wogan has finally hung up his dulcet coffe-coated tones as the campest tv event of the year becomes even camper. (Is that a word?) In keeping with the Irish tradition Graham Norton has taken over the feather boa’d reins (I know, I know).

And for those of us who quite enjoy spoilers, here’s one for you. A SPOILER. But just to warn you, it’s a SPOILER. An L Word SPOILER. For Season Six. A SPOILER!! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Saturday 6th December

LGBT Noise marched from the Dail to the Civil Registry Offices in protest at the government’s refusal to consider a referendum on gay marriage. There they staged a symbolic break-in of the offices. Up to 100 people took part according to reports. The protest was overshadowed by the 40000 who turned out at the same time to protest against the cuts in education.

Sunday 7th December

Rosenborg have apologised after one of their players referred to Valencia’s defenders as “homosexuals”. The top Norwegian football club issued the statement after defender Alejandro Lago made reference to the fact that the Spaniards had extra clothes flown in to cope with the cold Scandinavian clime ahead of their Champions League clash in Trondheim. In the apology, Rosenborg outlined that “one should not joke” either about matters religious or issues of sexuality.

A third division Italian footballer known only as Victory has claimed that a dozen Serie A players paid him for sex. He told TV La 7 that a “lot of them are bisexual, they are married or have girlfriends. They have a respectable image but none of them will ever admit to being gay, not for the time being anyway.” Players would meeet him in hotel rooms after matches or sometimes in the dressing rooms at the grounds. These claims follow MP Franco Grillini’s comments that a “lot of these players have girlfriends or wives – it’s all a facade. They are really scared of coming out because they are terrified what the supporters would say.”

That’s my pick of the gay news wires for the week. However, it doesn’t feel complete without the obligatory Lohnson news story. So, according to Lohan’s myspace page, herself and Sam are still an item. In her own words: “wow- the people that make sh*t up must really feel silly, embarrassed, out of stories, scr*w*d, f*ck*d, punk’d, and so much more.” There’s a song in there somewhere.

Carve yourself a spooky Halloween fruit in ten easy steps! It only takes about 20 minutes and it's lots of fun if you get a group of mates to help you. Buy a few pumpkins and make one each!

No related posts.

Step One: Pick yourself a nice pumpkin. One with a flat bottom and a longish stem preferably! Mini-pumpkins work if you don’t plan a design that is overly elaborate.

Step Two: Put on your apron and put out some newspaper (for the mess!)

Step Three: Get a bowl, a spoon, a pumpkin-carving knife (any sharp knife will do but watch your fingers!), a tea-light and a marker.

Step Four: Cut the top off the pumpkin by cutting a circle around the stem, keeping the knife pointing slightly inward toward the stem to avoid dropping the lid inside.

Step Five: Scrape out the pulp and seeds as much as possible. Put them in the bowl, keep seeds for toasting, otherwise discard. Flatten the inner floor of the pumpkin by scraping with the spoon.

Step Six: Experiment with patterns on a piece of paper. The simpler the better but if you’re feeling creative see here for some ideas.

Step Seven: Copy your design lightly onto the pumpkin using the marker.

Step Eight: Carefully cut out the pieces using the knife (watch your fingers!). Start at the centre (the nose) and work your way out to avoid putting pressure on areas of the pumpkin already carved which may cause the wall to collapse.

Step Nine: Remove any excess pulp from around the carved holes.

Step Ten: Light your tea-light and carefully place inside the pumpkin. Replace lid. And voila!

NB: Do not leave any candles unattended.

American stars Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes have involved themselves in a series of advertisements that encourage teens to choose their words more carefully.

“That’s so gay” is a phrase heard virtually everywhere that is frequented by teens. It’s supposed to describe something as being crap or rubbish (or as the Americans say, bad). I’m not sure how effective the ads will be in the States (does Sykes appeal to the youth? Isn’t Duff a bit naff or outmoded these days?) Anyway, have a gander and see what you think.
