“Webmaster, what sort of choice is that?” I hear you cry. Well stay with me, I shall explain! I was reading another website during the week and a debate ensued about being the only single person in your group of friends and having difficulty getting people to go out for the night because they are all partnered up. It got me thinking. I know when people first get together with their partner, there’s the honeymoon period where they lock the door and don’t want to see anyone else. It’s understandable. But one has to remember that one’s mates were there before the relationship and will most likely be there afterwards, in the event of it not lasting. I know I was guilty of the whole disappearing when I met Future-Mrs-Webmaster, but that was at the start and soon I was back on the scene for nights out. Not as much, in fairness, it would have been difficult to keep that partying up as the years progressed.

So my question is – if you’re a single person, do you have difficulty getting your parternifed mates to go out for the night?
If you’re in a relationship do you make an effort to go out and not just hang out with your partner all the time?

From the lovely people at Green Inc Film & Television:

We are currently filming a strand for our show, The Daily Show, presented by Dáithí O’Sé and Clare Byrne called “Modern Families” where we are featuring different families from around the country. We are featuring a stay at home Dad, a grandparent that looks after their children kids, we are just looking at the makeup of Irish modern families.

The idea is that we would send Irish Times journalist and father, Brian O’Connell, to meet the family and interview them at home about their everyday life.

Brian O’Connell has just completed a radio documentary, Dinner with Dad, for RTE Radio 1 and follows three single dads. One of those is widowed with three children, one a young 23 year old father who cares for his son full-time, and the other an older separated father with two children.

We are looking for a same sex couple raising a family. If you are interested please drop me an email to lisagernon@greeninc.ie with a contact number and I will give you a call.

N.B.: Filming is this Friday, 8th April 2011.

Morning folks! Happy weekend, in Dublin the sun is shining and its looking like its going to be a glorious day! Thank god the wind from the last few days has abated, I felt sure I saw
Dorothy’s house fly past at one stage.

Lets start with some good celeb news, spoilers ahead folks if you’re a fan of the two lovely ladies on Grey’s Anatomy, consider yourself forewarned!

Staying with another fav lesbian couple here at Gaelick HQ, the news is not so good with another person entering the mix. The couple are featured in the latest issue of Diva, they are featured. The Daily Fail was delighted to announce:

Rather appropriately, the teenage actresses have posed in a titillating shoot for lesbian magazine Diva, which sees them sharing a romantic bath together.

Seriously, Fail, “titillating”? God bless your cottons.

Aw, congrats to Helene Faasen and Anne-Marie Thus celebrate their tenth anniversary tomorrow:

On April 11, 2001, The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. Helene and Anne-Marie were one of four same-sex couples who tied the knot at the stroke of midnight by the Mayor of Amsterdam.

Mary Byrne apparently shocked everyone by announcing during the week:

She told New magazine, “A long time ago, in my early 20s, I had a fleeting relationship with a woman. It was just a one-off thing. I’d just come out of a bad relationship with a man and someone was there.”

Prepare yourself to be shocked some more, I’m about to reveal the results of a study. Whew, I felt faint there for a second, having control over sharing this information makes me feel weak

The study, which was conducted by a British funeral business, found that on average, men start to feel old at age 58. Unfortunately, women start to feel older far earlier — around age 29. Which is more than a little depressing.

I don’t want to be morbid but if you’re going to assess someone who’s in your funeral parlour picking out a coffin, they are probably not feeling on top of the world and would be a tad negative? Just a thought.

Even poor Gandhi isn’t safe from us ‘moes and our agenda.

Thankfully I didn’t see this ‘story’ yesterday, I would have fallen for it. Seriously, gullible.com is moi!

Sigourney Weaver, you are a goddess. That’s all I have to say on the matter.

Happy Thursday folks! We’re over Hump Day, to use an American expression, and the weekend is looming. I don’t know about you gals but I’ve noticed that sometimes when the current affairs and politics and bad news out there becomes too much for one, I need a distraction. That distraction can come in the form of Youtube videos (seriously, I reckon I have lost at least 5 years of my life to fanvids) and other times it can come in the form of lovely ladies. Now, there’s not a bit of objectification going on here. Well maybe a bit

Did you know firstly that the vest that the lovely cop ladies wear on the various crime shows that are on on d’telly is called Kevlar? Well I learned it recently. What I also didn’t know was that a woman invented it.

Read More here

Stephanie Kwolek, according to Women-Inventors, was one of the first women research chemists, she first gained national recognition in 1960 for her work with long molecule chains at low temperatures. In 1971, Kwolek’s further analysis culminated in an important discovery of a liquid crystalline polymer solution. Its exceptional strength and stiffness led to the invention of Kevlar, a synthetic material that is five times as strong as steel. Voila Kevlar.

Now that we’ve got the educational bit out of the way, lets check out how it looks on the various ladies. If you have a fav lady demonstrating how it should be worn and I have overlooked, by all means share in the comments. We’re all friends here

Xena

Okay so lets start with Xena. What? Put that eyebrow down. Okay, so perhaps it wasn’t called Kevlar but you know what, it saved her from many an arrow, spear, sword, you name it. Seriously, you try getting a hand, I mean arrow under that armour. Not happening.

Sara Sidle

Quirky smile, a bit of a loner, Sara Sidle made brooding sexy! You have to admit she wears it well.

Catherine Willows

Some competition in the old working the vest, Catherine and her crime fighting suitcase scrubs up well. With those gloves and that look, I can only assume she wants to examine me.

Jules Callaghan

Yes, right now unless you’re Canadian you may be sputtering your tea all over the keyboard. Stay with me, my story gets better. So I was doing research for this article, and let me tell you it’s tough going. Scrolling through images and more images of beautiful ladies. You get the idea. So I stumbled upon the above lady. Thought, she’s easy on the eye, must add her to my list of pics and I also thought she looks familar. Research led me to cringe. A lot. Turns out she’s Amy Jo Lawerence. I can see you shrugging your shoulders. For those of us a certain age, she was known as the Pink Ranger from Power Rangers. Enough said. Moving on

JJ Jareau

Blondes aren’t really my thing but JJ, well she’s just lovely! Look at the little concerned face on her. Sure wouldn’t ya only melt into her.

Emily Prentiss

If one ever needed an instructional diagram on how to wear the vest, look no further then Emily Prentiss. Sweet god above, it’s like it was moulded for her. She not only wears it she works it. * fans self *

Note to self: Self, next time pick something easier like maybe waistcoats or ties

‘WartGirl’ is one of this years RTE Storyland entries. Written by Mary Duffin and directed by Laura Mc Gann, WartGirl tells the story of a 19yr old girl who, on losing her virginity to the hottest guy in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, contracts genital warts. On her quest for revenge our heroine, Viv, gathers help from unlikely places, including her nerdy friend Tom, his transgender mum Sandra, and the lesbian mafia – aka the Mufia.

Director Laura says, “The Mufia has been a really fun idea to work with. People are always joking about ‘The Lesbian Mafia’ so we thought, ‘why not bring these girls to life?!’ When it comes to Sandra, we’re proud to be putting a positive representation of a trans person into a drama series. Sandra is a great character, a real Irish Mother and the strongest most stable character in the show.”

‘WartGirl’ goes live on www.rte.ie/storyland at 2pm on March 2nd, and voting is open for a week from that date.

United Nations Universal Periodic Review of Ireland- Let’s make trans people heard!

This is an open invitation to all members of the transgender community to join TENI
for a consultation with the Rights Now campaign:
Monday 21st February
6-8pm

Exchange Dublin (Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2)
For more information: office@teni.ie or (01) 873 3575.
Safe space and everyone is welcome

The United Nations Universal Periodic Review of Ireland is an important opportunity for us to highlight the gaps in human rights protection within Ireland. This is your chance to hold the government accountable for the lack of legal recognition, protection and visibility of transgender people.

What are the issues that matter to you? What are your experiences? Your input is the only way we can provide evidence of the current human rights situation for transgender people.

We ask that you consider your experiences with regards to the example questions below.

>Do you want to attain legal recognition of your preferred gender? (e.g. changing birth certificate)
>Have you had difficulty changing documentation to reflect your preferred gender? (e.g. passport, drivers license, medical cards, bank/credit card, student cards, etc.)
>Have you had difficulty or faced discrimination when accessing healthcare because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you had difficulty with medical insurance because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you had difficulty or faced discrimination when finding accommodation or keeping accommodation because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you had difficulty or faced discrimination when trying to find employment or keep employment because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you had difficulty or faced discrimination when accessing social welfare because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you faced discrimination in the education system because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you faced harassment or violence because of your gender identity and/or expression? (E.g. verbal abuse, derogatory statements, bullying, physical violence, sexual assault, etc.).
>Have you had ever tried to report a hate crime to the Gardaí?
>Have you had experiences with the criminal justice system related to your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you felt like your privacy has been compromised because of your gender identity and/or expression (e.g. have you been ‘outed’ against your will)?
>Have you been denied access to your children because of your gender identity and/or expression?
>Have you been denied access to adoption services or assisted reproductive technologies because of your gender identity and/or expression?
This is not an exhaustive list and we want to hear from you!

The consultation will be completely anonymous and confidential. No information that you provide will be linked to you as an individual and all identifying details will be removed when compiling the report.

This consultation is open to all transgender people. We would also like to invite partners, family members, friends and allies to contribute insight into their experiences. We want to include as wide a range of experiences as possible.

We recognise that some people may not feel comfortable discussing these issues in public or may not be able to attend a consultation in Dublin. We still want to hear from you. We are looking for diverse experiences from across Ireland. Please contact us at info@teni.ie or (01) 873 3575 and we will support you to tell us your story.

Make your voice count!

Friday March 11th from 10am – 4pm in LINC
(places are limited so please book asap)

LINC is a Resource Centre in Cork for Lesbian and Bisexual women and their families.
We are a voluntary community based organization (established in 1999).

The objective of these workshops is multi-faceted:

To highlight the role of LINC and its service provision at local and regional level

To network with and provide training for: youth organisations; service agencies; local partnerships; community supports and educational institutions.

To develop support systems for Lesbian/Bisexual women and their families within their own communities and peer support groups.

To heighten awareness concerning homophobia and sexual orientation.

The purpose of this awareness workshop is to raise awareness, not to lay blame with individuals who have skepticism or fear of homosexuality. The question of sexual orientation is a sensitive and sometimes challenging subject for many people. The ethos of LINC is to heighten awareness and understanding around discrimination and prejudice. We are acutely aware of the challenges people face in understanding the question of sexual orientation, but this fact need not be a barrier to gaining a better knowledge and understanding and consequently alter attitudes positively.

Training:

◊ Overview of LINC

◊ Equality and Diversity – open discussion on the meaning of these words in Irish society and for marginalized groups

◊ Role Play – Family, work, social experiences as a teenager, adult, partner etc..

◊ Homophobia and Sexual Orientation Awareness Group Work:

Myth Busting

Exploring Sexual Orientation

Definition of Homophobia

Consequences of Homophobia

Lesbian proof your organization

Your own experience? (Do you know anyone who is gay or lesbian)

◊ Open discussion, questions and answers session

◊ Evaluation

Cost = 50 euro

To make a booking please contact Tina at 021 4808600 or email tina@linc.ie

Morning folks. Your webmistress is suffering a bit today and not as a result of drinking copious amounts due to Ireland’s dismal display in the Six Nations yesterday. That would be alright. I am coming down with the flu methinks and I don’t make the best patient. Thankfully, for the better half, she has a spa day with her clan and is leaving me to whinge by the PC. But enough about me.

Speaking of all things ruggers, our ladies take on Italy today at 1.30. Here’s hoping the girls can get the Nations off to a winning start. Poor ould Scottish ladies took a bit of a hockeying on Friday night, 53-3. Ouch. The fab Scrumqueens have a preview of the game.

Lesbian news, its been a quiet week girls. We posted it on our Facebook wall during the week but in case you missed it, this lovely young gentleman talks quite eloquently about how he was raised by 2 lesbians and he’s normal.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSQQK2Vuf9Q

As an aside, the faces on some of the people behind him are quite classic. As if to say, well there’s no way you’re normal!

Those cute lesbians in Corrie have had to defend themselves again.
Coronation Street twosome Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson have hit back at viewers who have complained about their characters’ lesbian relationship

Sacha, who plays Sian in the soap, told the News Of The World, “It’s ridiculous, it shouldn’t even be an issue, it’s just a relationship.”

The pair also said they are unhappy to the reaction about their screen fling within the production itself.

They claimed that a director banned them from kissing while shooting a promotional clip for the 50th anniversary tram disaster show.

“But the director said Michelle Keegan and Craig Gazey could kiss because they’re a male -- female couple,” Brooke explained.

Cute as buttons and a wise head on those young shoulders. In true soap style though, there may be trouble ahead
. Spoiler ALERT!

Whilst sometimes the posts are eye-brow raising, the gals at jezebel are always worth a look.

This sounds outrageous and unbelieveable but apparently its happening.

Bobby Franklin, a (gasp!) Republican from Georgia, has introduced a bill to change the civil and criminal codes of the state so that victims of stalking, rape, and domestic violence must be called “accusers,” not victims. Oh my fucking god.

I’m not even going to try and articulate my annoyance, read the above post.

This is apparently breaking news. Royal Caribbean to host largest gay and lesbian cruise ever

The organizer of the voyage, Atlantis Events, Inc., says nearly 5,400 people have signed up for the seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, which begins in Fort Lauderdale and includes stops in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

I’m not sure I’d like an all gay cruise. Would you go on one? And how are they sure everyone is gay? Do we show our Sapphic ID on the way in? Brandish our homosexual agenda?
Although think of all the cruising jokes you could make

Lesbian Teens Holding Hands Too Scary for School
Holding hands is scary??

After years of allowing male-female pairs to march as the royal court of the Snow Days pep fest, Champlin Park High School? officials freaked when Sheldon and Lindstrom said, “We’re here, we’re queer, can we hold hands?” They suddenly told the girls there would be no teen pairs this year — just single royal court members or kids with an adult “important” to them.

It turns out, teenage lesbians are equally adept at controlling their hormones in social settings as the rest of their peers. So tell me, the next time you go to the mall and see two teen girls holding hands: can you even tell if they “like” like each other? I doubt it.

Counting the Transgender Community

Transgender people live with a bull’s-eye on their back. Anyone who denies this fact — so hard for some to swallow in the wake of recent victories on marriage equality and “don’t ask, don’t tell” for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people — is due for a wake-up call.

Shocker. The Daily Fail is postive gay story. The Facts of Life star Geri Jewell reveals she’s a lesbian in new memoir

Disabled actress Geri Jewell has come out as gay in her new memoir where she talks about her struggle coming to terms with her sexuality.

‘Homophobia: Tackle It!’ shirts during mainstream game

Players from the professional Rugby League club are dedicating their home game against Widnes Vikings in Sheffield on 13 March by wearing a specially commissioned shirt featuring the ‘Homophobia: Tackle It!’ slogan sponsored by LGBT History Month and Pride Sports.

That’s all folks.

I always feel a bit old seeing child actresses grow up right before my eyes and then do a double take when
they are not 12 any more.

Judging by Miss Portman’s latest role in Black Swan, it’s a far cry from Luc Besson’s classic. However it is refreshing to see her not go down the route of other child stars. She seems to have a sensible head on her young shoulders.

Born in Jerusalem, Israel, as the only child of a doctor father and an artist mother. Did you know Portman is her stage name? Reportedly she first adopted it because of fears she would discredit her parents in case her performance in Leon was unsatisfactory. I didn’t and it will be a fact that will wow people at our next dinner party. Whether they want to know or not. Best save it for a discussion that actually involes Natalie otherwise you’re going to look a bit weird.

Natalie and her family lived in Jerusalem until she was 3 years old. Due to her father’s medical training and career advancements, the family then moved to Washington D.C. in 1984, and then on to Connecticut in 1988. They moved again to Long Island, New York in 1990. That’s where she lived until her acceptance to Harvard in 1999 which made her stay 4 years in Boston. She now lives in Soho, NYC.

She was discovered by an agent in a pizza parlor at the age of 11. She was pushed towards a career in modeling but decided that she would rather pursue a career in acting. She was featured in many live performances, but she made her powerful film debut in the movie Leon (1994) (aka “The Professional”). Following this role Natalie won roles in such films as Heat (1995), Beautiful Girls (1996), and Mars Attacks! (1996).

She was a picky young actress, turning down roles often. She’d never, she said, appear in a horror movie, or a “Jennifer Love Hewitt-type” film. Among movies she decided she wanted no part in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm, Romeo and Juliet and The Horse Whisperer.

Then came Star Wars: Phantom Menace and Natalie became well know the world over as Queen Amidala. In fairnes she already had the stoic look down, I’m sure it didn’t take much to prepare for the role. From there she went onto to star with the always amazing Susan Saradon in Anywhere But Here. Reportedly Natalie had originally turned the part down, not wanting to play a nude scene. As Sarandon had co-star approval, she refused to continue without Natalie, so scenes were re-written. And Sarandon continued to laud Natalie after filming, saying “I felt at all times that I was working with an equal. She has a natural grace that doesn’t make her seem as if she’s of her generation”.

Next up was a teenage mom role in Where the Heart Is, but thankfully not the True-Life movie of the week type thing. This movie had Stockard “the goddess” Channing, Sally Field and lesbian fav Ashley Judd.

In 2000, she headed to college, Harvard to study psychology. Whilst studying, she did no more movies apart from the Star Wars movies which she was contracted to complete. In fairness, if you are going to do some movies to keep you ‘ticking over’ then Star Wars are the way to go

Finishing Harvard in 2003 with a degree in psychology, Portman jumped straight back into acting with roles in Cold Mountain and Garden State, starring opposite Zach Braff. For me, I can never see poor Zach in anything but blue scrubs. She received an Oscar nod for her role in Closer in 2004.

V for Vendetta opened in early 2006. Portman portrayed Evey Hammond, a young woman who is saved from the secret police by the main character, V. Portman worked with a voice coach for the role, learning to speak with an English accent, and she famously had her head shaved.

Bit parts in between V for Vendetta and Black Swan include Wong Kar-wai’s road movie My Blueberry Nights, The Other Boleyn Girl and the Wes Anderson short film Hotel Chevalier.

It must be infuriating for Natalie, who as an actress throws herself 100% into a role to have Black Swan constantly be mentioned for that one scene. The lesbian one. However she does acknowledge the scene was key.

“Everyone was so worried about who was going to want to see this movie,” she told the magazine. “I remember them being like, ‘How do you get guys to a ballet movie? How do you get girls to a thriller?’ And the answer is a lesbian scene. Everyone wants to see that.”

Other bits of trivia if she comes up at a table quiz near you, she’s been a vegetarian since she was 8. Something about her father doing surgery on a chicken. She can speak two languages, Hebrew and English (her native languages), fluently. One of her fav TV shows is Ellen
