Interview with Break My Fall Director Kanchi Wichmann

Oct 5th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

In June, I reviewed Break My Fall. The film, set in Hackney, follows Liza and Sally as their relationship falls apart, taking dignity, boundaries and friendships with it. Writer and Director Kanchi Wichmann was kind enough to answer a few of my questions in time for Break My Fall to be released on DVD. Break [...]

Review: Becoming Chaz

Aug 11th, 2011 | By Gooner | Category: Movies

Chaz Bono’s documentary, Becoming Chaz, was taken up by Oprah Winfrey’s Network, OWN, and aired in early May. I recently popped along to the Gaze film festival for a gander and wasn’t disappointed

Review: Break My Fall

Jul 31st, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

Break My Fall chronicles three days and nights in the death of a relationship. Despite that, it’s not an altogether sad film, although it contains triggers for domestic assault (emotional, physical and sexual). So, you’ve been warned.

Going Haywire for Gina

Jul 30th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Way way back in 2009, the second lady to be in the Alainn or Appalling section our lovely site was the one and only Gina Carano. She was, of course, considered to be álainn. And not just because we’d be afraid to say otherwise. Now she’s starring in Haywire, and the buzz is starting early.

Review: Sea Purple

Jul 29th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Angela loves Sara, but her father isn’t too sold on the idea. He hates women anyway, and wanted a son. Lightbulb moment! Why not make Angela into Angelo and everyone is happy? This true story is gorgeous but avoid the ending.

Eva Longoria is Far From Desperate

Jul 19th, 2011 | By Gooner | Category: Movies

Eva Longoria is set to hit the big screen as a leader among women in Gabriela Tagliavini’s Without Men. What makes it all the more interesting is that Ms Longoria gets it on with co-star Kate Del Castillo

Review: A Marine Story

Jul 14th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Made by husband-and-wife team Ned Farr and Dreya Weber, A Marine Story is their follow up to the successful The Gymnast. Again, it’s a tale of a strong woman trying to find where she fits in the world and, again, its heart is in Weber’s amazing central performance.

Who’s the hero? Harry, Hermione or Snape?

Jul 13th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Books, Movies

This is a bit weird, but the last week, for me, has been Harry Potter week. Which, I realise, it has been for a lot of people. The weird thing, for me, is that I have never read Harry Potter. I have only watched the films because my wife is a fan, and I will [...]

Albert Nobbs Given Fall Release Date

Jul 9th, 2011 | By Gooner | Category: Movies

This week saw Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment announce that they had purchased full US rights to Glenn Close’s Albert Nobbs. A movie in which Close plays a woman passing as a man in 19th Century Dublin. Could there be an Oscar in Glenn’s future?

She’s a wonder

Jul 4th, 2011 | By CherryBomb | Category: Movies

Last week I discovered that there is potential that the lovely Christina Hendricks may be set to play the role of the iconic superheroine, Wonder Woman, and.. I was disappointed.

Football Under Cover

Jun 21st, 2011 | By Gooner | Category: Movies, Sport

In April 2007 more that 1000 women turned up to the very first official football game played by the Iranian national women’s football team. They played host to a team from Berlin who had taken it upon themselves to go to Tehran, find sponsorship for the game and play a historic match.
This documentary follows Marlene and her German team mates as they head off to make history.

Pariah

Jun 18th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

I’ve searched to see if Pariah will be a part of any of the lesbian and gay film festivals, but they’re all remaining tight-lipped. If you get a chance to see this one, though, get at the front of the queue.

Review: A Sister’s Kiss

Jun 4th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

BuskFilms continue to provide us with great films for less than the price of a cuppa. This time out it’s the Russian film A Sister’s Kiss, which is a great little film. There’s just one huge problem, why did they call it that?

Review: A Rose By Any Other Name

May 27th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

It’s sad to say, but bisexual people still get treated like distant cousins in the rainbow family. The ‘fence sitters’ have to put up with an awful lot of crap from the rest of us, just because they like both men and women. It’s interesting, because the very people who would protest that we’re all born bisexual, are usually the very people who deride those who are in later life.

Review: The Owls

May 7th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Did you know that an OWL is an Older Wiser Lesbian? You do now. Ten years ago, a riot grrl group called The Screech were the big thing on the scene. Now, they are four wash-up lezzies who should know better.

Interview: “Looking For” Director Michelle Pollino

May 4th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

About a month ago, I reviewed a DVD of lesbian short films called Here Come the Girls 3, and particularly enjoyed one American short called Looking For. This week, I got the chance to catch up with the director of Looking For, Philadelphia-based Michelle Pollino. It was raining in Philadelphia, and I didn’t have the [...]
