Pariah

Jun 18th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

I’ve searched to see if Pariah will be a part of any of the lesbian and gay film festivals, but they’re all remaining tight-lipped. If you get a chance to see this one, though, get at the front of the queue.

Review: A Sister’s Kiss

Jun 4th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

BuskFilms continue to provide us with great films for less than the price of a cuppa. This time out it’s the Russian film A Sister’s Kiss, which is a great little film. There’s just one huge problem, why did they call it that?

Review: A Rose By Any Other Name

May 27th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

It’s sad to say, but bisexual people still get treated like distant cousins in the rainbow family. The ‘fence sitters’ have to put up with an awful lot of crap from the rest of us, just because they like both men and women. It’s interesting, because the very people who would protest that we’re all born bisexual, are usually the very people who deride those who are in later life.

Review: The Owls

May 7th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Did you know that an OWL is an Older Wiser Lesbian? You do now. Ten years ago, a riot grrl group called The Screech were the big thing on the scene. Now, they are four wash-up lezzies who should know better.

Interview: “Looking For” Director Michelle Pollino

May 4th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

About a month ago, I reviewed a DVD of lesbian short films called Here Come the Girls 3, and particularly enjoyed one American short called Looking For. This week, I got the chance to catch up with the director of Looking For, Philadelphia-based Michelle Pollino. It was raining in Philadelphia, and I didn’t have the [...]

Review: My Friend from Faro

My Friend From Faro is an excellent film, brilliantly made, with a top-notch script. I highly recommend it. There was just one thing that concerned me

Review: 510 Meters Above Sea Level

Apr 30th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

I’m not generally a fan of shorts as, if they’re good I don’t want them to end so quickly and if they’re bad, they’re a waste of time. 510 Meters Above Sea Level, though is a dreamy gem of a film. It uses the short-film format perfectly, giving you just enough so that you’re left wondering.

Review: Evelyn Everyone

Apr 18th, 2011 | By Gooner | Category: Movies

I do love a good short film but unfortunately for me, Evelyn Everyone fell well short of the mark. It may have won a few festival prizes but I see it as 17 mins I won’t get back. It was an interesting premise that just never took off and left you wondering how good it could have been.

Review: The Wedding Song

Apr 8th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

The Wedding Song (Le Chant des Mariées) is being distributed by Peccadillo, purveyors of all things gay, lesbian, trans and bisexual so it’s not a huge leap to assume it’s got some attendant subject matter. Not a bit of it. Unless hugging your friend is sex; or loving her is lesbian. Don’t let that put you off though, this is a gem of a film.

Study: Screen Gays are Stereotypes

Mar 30th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

PinkNews reports that the results of a study by the UK Film Council show that people believe the gay characters we see in movies are often too stereotypical. Seventy-per cent of the 1,705 people surveyed by Harris Interactive said that films tend to focus on gay people having problems rather than being everyday people. And [...]

Staying enlightened

Mar 28th, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

Enlightenment Films has given us two of the best (if not the two best) lesbian films of the last few years; A World Unseen and I Can’t Think Straight. But they’ve been financially shafted by their distribution company. Shamim Sarif had a chat with us about it all.

Review: She’s a Boy I Knew

Mar 24th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

A documentary about a person’s transition from male to female that focuses almost entirely on the reactions of those around her has the potential to be problematic. That makes it all the more impressive when a filmmaker pulls it off. She’s a Boy I Knew is made up of old photos, video footage, and interviews [...]

What’s she doing now?

Mar 21st, 2011 | By HAL | Category: Movies

It’s been ages since we’ve had a look back to see where gay for pay actors have disappearred to. This time, But I’m a Cheerleader.

Review: Here Come the Girls 3

Mar 16th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

Here Come the Girls 3 is a collection of nine short lesbian-themed films, gathered from the best of film festivals from around the world. Five of the films are American, but there are films from the UK, as well as subtitled films from Sweden, Korea, and Germany. I think especially with lesbian cinema, short films [...]

Review: Alix Olson Documentary, Left Lane

Mar 9th, 2011 | By CanuckJacq | Category: Movies

Thanks to the good people at BuskFilms, I had a chance to watch the 2005 documentary, Left Lane, about American performance poet Alix Olson. I have to admit, I had never heard of Alix before, but having seen Left Lane, I am quite sure I will pay more attention from now on. The documentary begins [...]
