What is this research about?

The experiences of lesbian and gay teachers who are considering, planning or have had a civil partnership or civil marriage.

What are the benefits of the research?

This research attempts to break some of the silences that have surrounded lesbian and gay teachers in Ireland in the past. Civil partnership creates a new space and opportunity to explore how lesbian and gay teachers are negotiating their way around issues related to their sexuality in their school environments. The new knowledge created by this research will inform key stakeholders in the Irish education system about the realities of the everyday lives of lesbian and gay teachers in Ireland.

What are you being invited to do?

As a teacher myself, I am very aware of the busy nature of teachers’ lives so participation in this research will be efficient and flexible! It will involve an interview with me (1 hour) and a reflective task on your everyday life (decided by you).

This just in from Irene Greene, an Applied Psychology student at University College Cork:

For my final year project I’m conducting research into the effect online support has on the well-being of transgender individuals.

Research in general populations regarding the effectiveness of online social support has found mixed results, but very little research has been carried out looking at the impact of social support on groups such as the transgender community.

We’re interested in examining whether online social support may positively affect the well-being of transgender individuals, as it may provide some people with a greater sense of support than they experience offline.

We hope that this study will lead to a better understanding of the impact of social support on the general well-being of members of the transgender community.

I have a short survey which should only take 15 minutes to complete. It is important for the study to get a large number of respondents in order to achieve reliable results.

If you are willing to take part, you can find the survey here.

My name is Sharon Heffernan and I am a student in Applied Psychology in UCC.

I am currently looking for participants to complete an anonymous online survey. You may participate in this study if you are over 18 years of age and identify as a sexual minority woman.

All of the information you provide will be anonymous and confidential. The study will involve 20 minutes of your time.

Why is World AIDS Day important?

At the end of 2010 (most current figures available) just under 6,000 people are currently living with HIV in Ireland. Globally an estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

What should I do on World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for you to learn the facts about HIV and put your knowledge into action. If you understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and the reality of living with HIV today, you can use this knowledge to take care of your own health and the health of others, and ensure you treat everyone living with HIV fairly, and with respect and understanding.

You can also show your support for people living with HIV on World AIDS Day by wearing a red ribbon, the international symbol of HIV awareness.

Earlier this year AMACH Wicklow received a grant from the Community Foundation of Ireland (CFI) to produce an event to disseminate information on The Civil Partnership and Co-Habitation Act. It was also to enable AMACH Wicklow to out-reach to more rural areas of Wicklow County to enable isolated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals to attend an event based in County Wicklow and meet up with other LGBT people.

The event being organised is a Seminar entitled Civil Partnership and Co-habitation Act – what could it mean to you? The seminar will be presented by Fergus Ryan PhD, Lecturer in Law, DIT. It will be held on Friday 25th November at 7.30pm in Hunters Hotel, Rathnew, Co. Wicklow. There will be a short reception before the seminar.

This event is being supported by Gay Bray, LGBT Diversity and The County Wicklow Partnership.

Please give your support to this worthy event by either attending yourself and/or persuading your friends to attend.

The event’s organisers would appreciate if you could let them know in advance if you are attending, as numbers are limited and they will need to have an idea of numbers for the hotel catering services.

The 5th Trans Day of Remembrance takes place Saturday 19th November at 8pm in the Unitarian Church, St. Stephens Green.

This event commemorates the lives injured and lost due to transphobia. Through candle lighting, speeches and songs we remember and also look forward to a new year ahead, and better lives for trans people in Ireland.

The Trans Day of Remembrance gives us the opportunity to critically examine how transphobia effects the trans community beyond murder. It also gives us a chance to look forward to what we are changing and what happens the 364 days that we are not formally remembering.

Organised by Sara Philips and Lynda Sheridan. Supported by TENI, Gender Identity Support Ireland, Running Amach, the Unitarian Church and the Lord Mayor’s Office.

Irish Artists Lend Their Support to Marriage Equality
16.11.2011

The work of some of Ireland’s leading artists will come under the hammer at an art auction fundraising event for Marriage Equality. Entitled “Art for Marriage Equality”, the auction takes place on Saturday, November 26th and features pieces from Anne Madden, Pauline Bewick, Steven Mannion, Jim Fitzpatrick and many more.

Adams Auctioneers have given their services free and will oversee the proceedings. Director Eamon O’Connor is hopeful that the donated work – which ranges from paintings to sculpture and ceramics – will sell well on the day.

“I am delighted with the support we have received from the artists who have generously donated their work to our auction – it’s events like this that really make a difference to our fundraising efforts,” said Marriage Equality Director Moninne Griffith. “We are a not for profit organisation working for equality for same sex couples, families and children. Many people think that civil partnership is the same as marriage but it is not, and same sex families still face discrimination on a daily basis because of the marriage ban for lesbian and gay people.”

Artist Steven Mannion explains why he’s supporting the event:

“When my husband and I got married we had to travel to Canada to do it. I didn’t believe that civil partnership was an option because Eamon asked me to marry him, he didn’t ask me to civil partner him! When I said I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life, I didn’t mean as a legally recognised, cohabiting, same sex, civil partner… I meant as his husband. That’s why my husband and I, our family and friends support Marriage Equality and the team who work so tirelessly to achieve it.”

Sculptor Ann Meldon Hugh added:

“I believe this is an extremely important cause to support. All Irish people should be treated as equal, and all Irish families and children should be given equal rights. Families, human relationships and the interactions of the individual with the environment around them is central to much of my work, so it seems fitting that I should give a piece to a cause that works to improve and stabilise the Irish legal environment for the families of gay and lesbian people in Ireland.”

The pieces will be displayed in a public exhibition at 14/15 St Stephen’s Green (corner of Dawson Street) on Friday, November 25th from 12:00–9:00 pm and on Saturday, 26th from 12:00 – 5:00.pm.

An on-line catalogue will be available to view on www.marriagequality.ie. An on-line bidding facility will also be available online.

Although the Supreme Court will not be hearing the case tomorrow, it is unlikely the hearing will take place before the end of the year, tomorrow’s decision may provide us with a glimpse of how the Supreme Court are feeling about this case.

We are going to show our support by launching our Just Love? Countdown to KAL (Katherine and Ann Louise) website tomorrow and we are hoping as many people as possible will join us at the Four Courts at 11am to let them know that we are with them – all the way.

If you would like to join us please call us on (01)8734183 and we will organise to bring Just Love? placards for anyone who would like to show their support with us outside the Four Courts and we also hope to make it in to the court if there is enough room for us all.

Hope to see you there and if you can’t make it tomorrow, please log on to our new Just Love? Countdown to KAL website tomorrow to upload your messages of support for Katherine and Ann Louise.
