Well, reader, if you are anything like this author then the increasing proximity to Valentine’s Day is probably inciting an incendiary cynicism within you. But even the hardest of hearts will fail to resist the warmth and intimacy of I ♥ Alice ♥ I, a piece of documentary theatre that is deeply personal, funny and refreshing.

Alice Kinsella and Alice Slattery are two retired women who live together in South Dublin City. They are an unlikely couple. And for 25 years, they have preferred that perception. Some would call it cowardice to spend a quarter-of-a-century long relationship in the closet. But Alice and Alice are now telling the story of their time together for the first time with disarming candour. To do so from the stage of The Peacock Theatre is unimaginably brave. Their honesty is not forthright, but delicate. The reluctant raconteurs share anecdotes that are often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking.

The success of this heart-warming and intimate production is thanks in no small part to the actors, Clare Barrett and Amy Conroy, whose understated, tender portrayals of the two Alices gently and deliberately reveal both the nature of their relationship and their choice to reveal it at this time.

So before the overbearing artifice of Valentine’s Day deprives love of meaningful expression for you, go listen to Alice and Alice tell the story of an ordinary life that is retold with extraordinary honesty. Forget overpriced flowers and heart-shaped contrivances because the depths of loving expression find perfect articulation in the nanoseconds when either of the Alices recounts some event of their time together in faithful detail and the other is moved to steal a private glance in adoration (and sometimes reproach).

I ♥ Alice ♥ I premiered during the Absolut Fringe Festival in 2010 and was heralded as a festival gem.

I ♥ Alice ♥ I is undoubtedly a crucial contribution to the burgeoning folio of gay theatre and it is also a seminal piece of Irish theatre, which has been affirmed by the receipt of two Absolut Fringe awards that year, the Fishamble New Writing Award and Best Female Performer (Clare Barrett).

It was also recently announced that writer and performer of the piece, Amy Conroy, has been nominated for Best Actress in the Irish Theatre Awards for her most recent work, Eternal Rising of the Sun.

Gaelick contributor, Bear, recently interviewed I ♥ Alice ♥ I writer, director and performer, Amy Conroy. Watch out for the interview later today when it will be published on Gaelick!

I ♥ Alice ♥ I runs until Saturday, February 18th 2012 in The Peacock Theatre, Dublin. Tickets range from €13-€25 and are available from www.abbeytheatre.ie. Runtime: 55 minutes approximately.

The Abbey Theatre is also hosting an additional event with Senator Katharine Zappone and Dr. Ann Louise Gilligan who will tell the story of their lives and their love on Valentine’s Day, February 14th at 6pm. General admission is €3.

Rock Hudson was the first public “face” of AIDS. Diagnosed in 1984, he disclosed his diagnosis in 1985 and made the general public reconsider the notions they had about who could get AIDS.

If Rock Hudson can have it, nice people can have it. It’s just a disease, not a moral affliction.

- William Hoffman (1985)

A new play by Aidan Harney, Hollywood Valhalla, explores the time between Hudson’s diagnosis and his disclosure: how the first public figure with AIDS decided to tell the world. The two characters are Rock Hudson and his fitness instructor and friend, Toby.

Living in the middle of nowhere, I’ve been unable to make it to the show. For anyone remotely fascinated by queer stories or that muddled intersection between the public and the private, where fame and a person’s inner life meet (and struggle), it’d be hard to find a better way to spend your lunch break if you happen to be in Dublin.

Reviews:

Mesmerising … Harney’s sharp and self-assured script is … the most entertaining, dramatically satisfying two-hander I’ve witnessed for some time.

- Irish Independent

It’s quite an achievement… whimsical, courageous, dignified.

- Sunday Independent

FOUR STARS * * * *

- Irish Mail on Sunday

Harney seems shy to put words in Hudson’s mouth, which leads to a sad kind of silence of a myth unmasked: gone is the zing we remember from Rock’s romantic comedies, the excess emotion of his melodramas, or even the enjoyably breathless pap of the soap opera. Instead, we have a Rock of mumbling realism with a story that deserves better telling; a complicated film star rendered as Movie of the Week .

- The Irish Times

The play’s best scene is the nicely played moment when Toby reads Linda Evans’ lines from Dynasty in a faux-feminine voice and Rock becomes ‘Rock’ the hypermasculine lothario. The interplay between real and fake, masculine and feminine, and public and private is nicely realised as a play within a play that gives formal heft to the theme of performance and roleplay, and both Byrnes and Roche play it beautifully.

- Irish Theatre Magazine

Hollywood Valhalla has four shows remaining (today through Saturday) at 1.10pm at Bewleys Café Theatre. Tickets are €10-12 euro. An extra €4 gets you a soup and bread lunch.

Special Guest playshop – To be announced!

(Everyone is probably going to go for the ‘Special Guest’ playshop to see what Yoda of sex turns up to dish out some sexy lessons.)

After their sex lesson people will have a half an hour to mingle, chat and check out what the stalls have on offer before choosing a new sexshop from this list:

Spiritual Speed Dating – Fiona Daly
Alchemy of Love – Glenn Sullivan
Yoga for Every Body – Tobye Hillier
An Introduction to Kink! – C. A. O’Hara

Personally I think ‘An Introduction to Kink!’ sounds both profound and useful although ‘Spiritual Speed Dating’ could lead to finding a ‘soul mate‘. By this time everyone should be both hungry and horny so if there’s no rooms about get some food. There will be a dinner break from 5.30pm-7pm. Just enough time to get fed, bed and rejuvinated before the second half of the sex fest commences.

From 7pm-9pm can anybody guess what’s next? That’s right, another sensual playshop for two hours so choose your playshop wisely.

Tantra Massage – Sensual Loving Touch for Couples and Partners – Lynn Paterson
Awakening the Senses – Beth Wallace
Special Guest playshop – To be announced!

‘Tantra Massage’ sounds all well and good unless it’s the kind of tantra massage that was dished out in Sex and the City. Nobody wants to run the risk of a possible ‘There’s Something About Mary’ hair do.

The night concludes at 9pm with a social gathering that provides non-alcoholic beverages, performers, music and a chance to talk to others about your experience at Dublin’s first ever sex fest.

Currently tickets are €55 with concession and are €75 without. Tickets can be purchased online here and detailed information on the festival, performers and guests can be found on the ‘Bliss Festival‘ blog here and on Facebook.

We’re starting to feel very nervous here: two of Gaelick’s finest (aheh-hem) are due to appear on Dublin’s Near FM this Sunday, 22nd January, at 5:30pm for Pride Time with the fabulous Sinéad Ní Chonaill.

We’ll be chatting a bit about Gaelick, about ourselves, and generally about all things lesbian, bi, trans and queer in Ireland. Is there anything in particular you think we should mention?

If you’re a Dubliner and you’ve warmed the wireless, you can gather ’round and tune in on 90.3FM. Everyone else can catch the live stream online. Listeners can also text or tweet their comments while we’re on air.

And if you miss the show, you’ve no excuses: the show will be uploaded as a podcast afterwards. So yas better listen!

A bit about the Pride Time programme:

Pride Time is aired every Sunday on Near FM (90.3 MHz) from 5.30pm-6.30pm. It’s hosted by Sinéad Ní Chonaill and is an outlet for the LGBT community with music, gig guides, events and activities and interviews.

The inaugural show launched on Sunday, 4th September 2011.

Figures from the inaugural show have been impressive, and from different stats both through the radio frequency and streaming there have been listeners from all over Ireland, Britain, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Ghana and South Africa.

(So no pressure, then..!)

Currently, Pride Time is one of two radio shows dedicated to the LGBT community in Ireland.

Still more:

In advance of Sunday’s programme, you can listen to Sinéad presenting Left of the Dial tonight. She’ll be playing oodles of indie and rock to shake your bones. The show starts at 10pm. So get listening!

Happy New Year, bitches!

Bitches Be Crazy is back for 2012: same Bitch time, same Bitch channel.

If you need a little sojourn away from the sobriety of dreary January, your best bet this BBC: there’s a 99% chance you will lose your shit every time a track starts playing, the music is just that good.

Confirmed DJs on the night are Alex, Una, Bucko, plus the fabulous Joey Kavanagh (@thebubbleboy and sphericalnotions).

The usual rules apply: BYOB. Doors 9pm. €5 before 10pm, €10 thereafter.

Here’s what you missed last time around: Bitches Be Hazy.

And here’s a guess at the kind of sounds you’re likely to hear. Maybe. (It’s just a guess.)

You’ll just have to head along to find out whether my predictions are correct!

Here’s another article from one of our new writers, Tole. Enjoy!

As a young gay (and by young, I mean, fresh off the train, wearing short pants, clutching my suitcase with a wide eyed stare as I entered an unknown village), I had great expectations that I would soon be charming women every night of the week and giving off the impression that I was some type of modern day Casanova.

So when this did not come to fruition, I was greatly surprised. It took me a while to figure out the root of my failings, but when I did, it came down to a number of crucial things:

It appeared I had an inability to converse with people, something I had hitherto excelled at.

When I did speak, it was often nonsensical and delivered at a very high pitch so that it seemed I was interested only in communicating with seagulls.

Anybody I did manage to talk to with any motive of intent, was already coupled up or proved stranger and more high pitched than I was. And I couldn’t be dealing with that sort of competition.

So a chance purchase of an L Word box set (which I figured would surely teach me everything I needed to know) also happened to contain three months free membership for an online dating site. This little card gave me some hope that I could navigate the world a bit better from the comfort of my home, where I had control over my actions, free of occasional squawking noises and the like.

So, I now had the opportunity to be an ever dashing charmer with an unlimited amount of messages to woo these potential suitors with. No “soz babes I’m outta messages, if you fancy a chat add me on msn-smiley face, lol” woes for me.

However, the stress of it all proved too much after a while. The excellent banter back and forth only for it stop abruptly, the occasional drink with somebody who turned out to be incredibly boring, or bumping into that hot girl you took seven hours composing a two line message to, only to never hear anything back. My nerves quite simply weren’t able for it. And so I hung up my online lady killer boots which to my shame, never managed to get all that dirty for a finish.

Having upped my social skills a tad since then (I don’t come off as wanting to live my life on a beach anymore), I recently found myself back online. It may have been exam time. It may also have been the month I discovered a love for the unnecessary filing of all my photos in order of the number of people present in them. But if I was to be at my computer ‘revising’, I thought somebody should at least be entertaining me while I did so.

And it certainly was entertaining for a while, as I discovered that many of the same lovely faces were still online. Yet like a solid old man’s pub, they had refused to move with the times. Many of them were still “just out of a relationship, only looking for fun” (which to be fair, is always a bit of a winning statement), “still really new to this, not sure what to say” (really? But it’s three years later), while the amount of people (“new age kids” I like to call them) who spell their names with both letters and numbers was astonishing.

Of course, there were also a few gems of people in there, fun and witty. However, for the most part, it would seem that we all sat around logged in, yet not saying much. I mean, I can’t prove this for definite, just that the masses didn’t seem to be messaging me, which I found strange, given that I had personally awarded myself 4/5 stars for my new profile.

Whatever about communicating with people in real life, I’ve always found that online, you have time to think, to open and reply to a message with a great answer, and if not great, at the least, relatively engaging.

Some of the profiles provide great material to start a conversation, plenty of interests and quirks that can arm you with something slightly original to say. But yet, a lot of people continue to open with ‘Hi, how are you?’. Given that we live in Ireland, surely it’s only natural that a response to this would also include a comment on the weather, followed by an inquiry into the health of the person’s ailing grandmother and before you know it, everybody has lost interest.

I gradually became more annoyed by these messages. I just couldn’t bring myself to reply to them. And so, I asked that, if people were feeling charitable enough to message me, then dear Jesus, make it worthwhile and something that I might actually respond to.

It has kind of worked, I think. Or else I just come across as so demanding that the ‘hi how are you lol’ people, a wily bunch, know I’m probably not worth the effort. But I’ve had some good banter with a few people and have progressed towards ‘friendly acquaintance’ stage.

And just so you know, things online move like this these days:

As usual you chat, and this can range from a few hours, days or weeks.

You then become friends on Facebook to prove that neither of you is insane/a murdering kidnapper.

You may find out that you have a few friends in common, but that you are not in fact related. Good to go.

You maybe meet for a drink and get on well. Excellent.

This is surely the holy grail of online dating. You arrange to actually meet the person. Anything that happens after that is either terrifying or pleasant (it can always go either way to be honest).

The important thing is, that if you plan to while away a number of hours online, then make yourself interesting (although don’t lie about it. If you’re boring, then that’s just how it is), be engaging and if you are really so concerned about the person’s health, or how their weekend went, think how overly concerned you’ll be about them if you actually end up meeting and liking them. Better to open about their penchant for Anne Doyle and the vigil they now they keep for her by their bedside.

Sounds like a winner to me.

Yesterday morning, in the aftermath of Bitches Be Crazy’s Christmas hoe-down, bitches were seriously hazy.

A gaggle of mates and I gathered to meet at the Spire in Dublin on Friday night, before making our way to the club. I’d been meaning to get to Bitches Be Crazy since I first heard about it in its previous home on Thomas Street. So we were first timers, each and every one of us.

As we stumbled out into the cold wee hours of Saturday morning some time later, none of us would shut the hell up about how great the music was, how great the crowd was, how positive the vibe was, how Dublin – nay, Ireland – shouldn’t have had to wait until 2011 for a club like this to come along.

In the past, we’ve had “alternative” club nights, which have promised much and delivered little. (Q+A, I’m looking at you.) After years of disappointment, our patience has finally been rewarded.

Thanks to all the crazy bitches for throwing an epic party!

And now that we’ve recovered, here are some of the highlights from the night.

(If you missed it, believe me, you seriously missed out.)

Bitches Be Crazy, Dublin’s best queer pop-up DIY night, is back for the holidays! And this time, Bitches Be Crackers.

The party takes place this Friday, 16th December. Doors 9pm. It’s a fiver in before 10pm, and €10 after that. Bring your own booze and get loco. (Bitches be recession-aware.)

According to Le Cool’s Emily O’Callaghan, Bitches Be Crazy came into being after a conversation between organisers Katie Guinnane and Vickey Curtis about the absence of alternative and less expensive club nights.

Originally held in The Jam Factory on Thomas Street, the party has since moved northside. DJs include Ragin, Nic’la, Kay-Z, Corina Gaffey, Ashley, and more.

Confirm you’re attending via Facebook to get the full details.

Here are some photies from Bitches past:

This just in from another of our new writers, roving reporter, Soapie:

Friday 18th November marked the start of Pink Training, the gayest weekend on the calendar (except Pride, of course!).

Organised by Siobhán McGuire, the LGBT Rights Officer for USI, and held in NUIG, the training was a 3 day affair, packed with intriguing workshops and fabulous socials.

A so called ‘Pink Training Virgin’, I couldn’t wait to get my cherry popped.

Friday

The shenanigans started right once we’d stepped on the bus. A DITer, I was among the best of the best, half of the delegates had been to Training before, some even 3 or 4 times. Sat behind a couple of girls in their 1st year in college, I set about getting to know the new faces. It wasn’t long before we were singing to ABBA and playing Celebrity Heads together like long lost cousins – before we knew it were in Galway!

Having been introduced to our Sleepzone Hostel and no-drinking-in-rooms policy, it was time to register to collect our goodie bags and wrist bands. A tidy navy blue kitbag, it contained the programme of proceedings, an LGBT Helpine card, Gay Prom promo flyer, USI pen, and of course the all important BASEBALL SHIRT. (Can you tell I’ve always wanted one?) Oh, and the ‘free-in’ wristband of course, which came in neon pink – perfect for Saturday’s UV Party!

With bunk-beds bagsied and matching blue logo-ed society t-shirts donned, it was time to head on down to the beauuuutiful NUI Galway. Dotted with grand old buildings and clustered with innovative new ones, it was a treat to wander our way down to the Concourse for the Official Opening. And what an opening! Heart felt speeches were given by Siobhán McGuire and Gary Redmond, USI President – intermitted by DIT’s passionate drumming scores. Then after the speeches had received a thorough standing ovation, we played a few rounds of the infamous USI Stand Up Sit Down Game before a packed Table Quiz and a night out on the lash in Galway’s Dignity Nightclub. Now, what happens in Dignity stays in Dignity.

Saturday

Saturday morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed from Hostel orange juice – ya gotta love hostel orange juice – the clan headed back down to the NUIG Concourse for Michael Barron’s keynote speech. A remarkable man, he told the story of how and why he set up Belong To, originally a response to homelessness, creating a safe place for young LGBT people to be themselves and confront their difficulties. Closing his speech, he left us with BeLonGTo’s campaign video Stand Up! Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it already.

Coming out workshops quite aptly followed Michael’s speech, covering how and if to come out yourself, and then how to support someone who’s coming out. There was also a Trans Closed Space with Cat McIlroy, open only to those identifying as trans to create a safe space for conversation. Other workshops that were covered that day included Implementing Human Rights Standards, LGBT Sexual Health, Revolting Homosexuals with Tonie Walsh, Heteronormativity, Bi Awareness and the unforgettable Billie’s Sexual Empowerment.

With brains stuffed with knowledge we headed back to the hostel to prepare for another night painting the town pink in… Dignity Nightclub. Prepping on a game of Taboo and some fanta with vodka from a tea cup, we headed on out. Once again, what happens in Dignity stays in Dignity – bar “I shifted the titty-wank guy!” (No, not me!)

Sunday

The final day of training, our poor baseball-tee clad gays were getting a bit sleep and emotional, no more Pink Training for another whole YEAR! But nevertheless, we made the very best of our last day. With open spaces for Bis, Trans, Lesbians, Gays and Allies, everybody was catered for.

Then, once we’d gotten everything off our chests, it was time for the Closing Speech. Presented by Siobhán, it marked the end to a brilliant weekend, definitely one to be remembered for some time – if not until next year.

Thanks Siobhán!

DIT, DIT, DIT!!!

“BeLonG To’s Gay Prom is a celebration and coming out party for people of all ages. It’s a fabulous party, but not only that – it’s about our community supporting its young people to come out safely and to have all the same opportunities as other young people.

“Because of bullying and exclusion school can be a really tough place for LGBT young people. Traditional school Debs can be difficult for them, with many not going and still more not being able to bring a same-sex partner. Gay Prom is about addressing this so that gay young people know that they are valued and have the same rights as everyone else.”

BeLonG To Youth Services is the national youth organisation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) young people in Ireland. BeLonG To was established in 2003 and envisions a future in which LGBT young people are safe and supported in their families, schools and communities, and all young people are equally cared for, valued, and respected.

BeLonG To provides direct youth services to LGBT young people in Dublin and supports LGBT youth groups all around Ireland. They engage in national policy, training and awareness programs, including the Stand Up! Don’t Stand for Homophobic Bullying Campaign.
