So often women in sport are over looked. However, Guinness have added to the sponsorship of the Rugby Writers of Ireland Player of the Year Award with an equivalent for the women’s game. Lynne Cantwell is first to receive the honour and well deserved it is too.

Preview – FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011
Sunday sees the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup kick off in Germany. This is a chance to see some of the best players in the world do what they do best. Ireland may not be involved but there is still plenty to keep us interested.
So let’s take a look at the teams.
Guinean sisters dropped from World Cup squad
Star players, and sisters, Salimata and Bilguisa Simpore have been dropped from the Equatorial Guinean team for the up coming World Cup because of yet another gender controversy in world sport.
Anyone for tennis?
Just in case you’ve been hiding under a rock this week, Wimbledon started on Monday. For some this means the start of the summer, for others the end of exams. All good things. For many of us, it’s watching those long, long legs in those short, short skirts. Is it any wonder so many of us love the sport?
Football Under Cover
In April 2007 more that 1000 women turned up to the very first official football game played by the Iranian national women’s football team. They played host to a team from Berlin who had taken it upon themselves to go to Tehran, find sponsorship for the game and play a historic match.
This documentary follows Marlene and her German team mates as they head off to make history.
Giant Step Forward
The San Francisco Giants are getting ready to tell young LGBTs that “It Gets Better” as they become the first professional sports team to make a video as part of the worldwide campaign to stop young gays committing suicide.
Taylor Ready to Fight for Equality
Katie Taylor hits another wonderfully aimed punch, this time at those in the sport who say she must wear a skirt in the ring. So many reasons to cheer on and be proud of this top Irish athlete and now just one more to add
Anton Hysen Comes Out
Swedish footballer Anton Hyden has taken the brave step to come out as gay, making him, from what I can tell, the only out footballer, still playing, in Euope
England cricketer Steve Davies comes out
Rugby player Gareth Thomas came out as gay in 2009 and now it seems England cricketer Steve Davies is following suit. It’s wonderful to see someone decide to do this in the public eye while at the height of their career
Lose weight and you’ll be happy
It’s February and most people have, very sensibly, thrown all of that New Year crap out the window by now. Four weeks of eating rice crackers and tofu is enough for anyone. Some of us, and yes I said “us”, are still at it. I am an over-weight lady. Not that I care to be honest, but I need to lose a bit to be healthy.
Rugby: Six Nations gets underway
According to ScrumQueens the only women’s 6-Nations game being beamed to your tellies will be Ireland v England, again on Sky. It’s our last game of the Six Nations. It’s at home. And it’s on 18th March next, just after St Patrick’s Day. The perfect rugby storm!
Sexism in Sport
Following on from the sacking of Andy Grey from Sky Sports, is the issue of sexism in sport being dealt with according to it’s severity, or is this just a small gesture to put the issue back in its box?
Sky Sports’ Own Goal
I have blogged on a number of occasions about the problem of homophobia in football but much to my annoyance this is not the only problem the sport faces. Sexism is rife, as illustrated by Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Grey as they leave their mikes on.
Phoenix Rowing Club and OutRowers Open Day
OutInIreland is a network of people who love to either play tennis, squash, badminton or even row boats. I am the latter and have had the pleasure of rowing with some lovely people over the last two years. Some of whom have now started up a new, bigger, shinier club called Phoenix Rowing.
Gareth Thomas’ Life to be made into a Biopic
In 2009 Welsh Rugby star Gareth Thomas became the first rugby player to come out as gay to the media and the world. He is now in talks to have his life made into a movie with Mickey Rourke hopeful of landing the role.
