A is for lots of lovely ladies beginning with the letter A. Good Gaelick readers, you would not believe the work, the hard slog we endevaour to take to bring you these pics. Hours and hours on Google Images, believe me there are not enough hours in the day.

Here at Gaelick HQ we got talking one day, about the ladies and how you seem to like them a lot. One only needs to look at the traffic Álainn or Appallin’ generates. So we are going to bring you the A to Z of lovely ladies. They can be actresses, singers, tennis players, golfers, anything you like. If there is someone hot you think we are missing, for the love of Sigourney Weaver share!

Along the lines of Seasme Street (not sure if you are old enough to remember that) the letter will change but only when we run out of lovely ladies beginning with initial. Got the idea?

Without further ado, I give you

Ali Larter – Best known for her role in Final Destination 2 as Clear Rivers, oh Ali, I’d love to be your final destination

Amber Heard – Have you heard? Amber is a lesbian Sorry, I’ll stop with the bad puns now. Appreciate the walk.

Angelina Jolie – The ladies here at HQ are strangely divided on this one, some think she is hotness personified, * holds up hand *, others think she is skankalicious. What do YOU think. I think I want a strawberry, * fans self *

Anne Hathaway – Ah, Anne, me ould flower! The quintessential girl next door. And she loves us gays so she does * nods *

Angie Harmon – When she strides onto the tv screen and cocks the hip to one side showing off her badge, my heart does the strangest things.
Don’t get me started on her husky voice. Is it just me or is getting hot in here?

Who’s your favourite A lady? I notice all my choices were actresses, am pretty sure there are some lovely ladies who sing, dance, play tennis that I have missed

For no other reasons than they are gorgeous and I can, here are a group of ladies who show that having a wee wan does nothing to diminish your sex appeal. There are so many of these ladies, that this is the first of two posts. You’re welcome.

Angelina Jolie

How many does she have now? The gorgeous actress is working on populating her own country with gorgeous children and is well on her way.

Alyson Hannigan

How cute is that picture! Alyson Hannigan seems to found the fountain of youth as she’s still as gorgeous as she was when she was playing the only lesbian on American television. Her little girl has the DNA to stay as cute as she is now, for a long time.

Angie Harmon

Not sure what the story is with that cardie in the pic on the right. She still manages to look drop dead gorge though. Angie has another little girl too, who is just a babóg. Plus, their dad is a hunk, I see modelling contracts in their future.

Lucy Lawless

Lucy has a two young sons as well as her daughter, Daisy, who she pictured with above. She also, tragically, had a miscarriage just after finishing Xena. The woman is 49 and look at her

Mariska Hargitay

Mariska upped the hot quota on the television for many, many years. She maybe not be as butch as Rizzoli, but she can cock that hip with the best of them. Her son’s granny was Jane’s Mansfield and his mother looks like that; we’re talking DNA lottery winner.

Milla Jovovich

I hope no one tries to bully this little cutie, Mamma Milla can seriously kick some arse.

Pink

A new entry to the parent club, those abs will need some serious work to get back into that shape. Somehow I don’t think she cares very much.

No news there. We all know it. Every once in a while though, you have to wonder why magazines bother trying desperately to make ‘news’ stories out of the fact that Angie frowned once last Tuesday.

These mags are made, mainly, by women for women and the market is fit as a fiddle, making millions. It’s also making heroines out of people whose only talent is choosing the right publicist. Look at Katie Price and yer man Peter Andre. On the cover of every 50c tabloid in the shops, what have they actually done in the last year? Made money by playing the game.

The reason I’m telling you something you already know is that my partner sent me an article this morning. It’s about Dr Hawa Abdi. Who? Precisely, people, precisely!

Dr Hawa Abdi is, as her name would suggest, a doctor. She set up a one-room clinic in her home of Somalia about 30 years ago and has saved countless lives since.

“Oh no,” I hear you complain, “Hal has gone all worthy on us”.

It’s not like me, so you know I have to have a reason, please indulge me for a moment.

Over the years, as the clinic grew into a hospital, tents have sprung up too, turning the area into a small town of more than 90,000 people. It’s the only place people feel safe as Mama Adbi, as she in known, doesn’t take any flack from the armies that are intent on destroying Somalia while killing each other. She gets on with the business of saving people.

Now, why do I know the intestinal urges of Lindsey Lohan when I don’t know about people like Mama Abdi?

This is the kind of story that writes itself, editors, let’s be as crass as you seem to be; gorgeous people, heroic story, politically correct. Where’s the problem?

Escaping into a world of ab fab kitchens, fabulous dresses and a pseudo-earnest SMAW (singer, model, actress, whatever) talking about the difficulty in like you know acting, is all well and good. A bit of fantasy never killed anyone. But it’s taken over. The joke has eaten itself, to bastardise a phrase. What used to be a freak show is seen as the norm, as something to strive towards.

Thank what/who ever you believe in that there are still real heroes out there, like Mama Abdi. Tell us about any you’ve come across. Let’s cancel out the odious yet unavoidable drivel.

Let me put it to you this way, back in June, Dr Hawa Abdi, although recognised, didn’t win the Glamour Woman of the Year Award. It went to Cheryl Cole.

Here we present you with Gaelick’s films of 2010 – and a couple extra. Have you watched ‘em? Have we missed any? What tops your list from this year?

The Four Faced Liar

There’s a tower-clock in Cork city upon whose four faces there are four different times displayed. Its nickname is the local bar in this film and gives it its title, but the four faces of lies are actually the four central characters.

Viola de Mare

Angela loves Sara, but her father isn’t too sold on the idea. He hates women anyway, and wanted a son. Lightbulb moment! Why not make Angela into Angelo and everyone is happy? This true story is gorgeous but avoid the ending.

Don’t Stop

Cathy DeBuono and Jill Bennet play partners, Dyna and Kit, who both work as relationship counsellors. They just happen to be having relationship problems of their own and are seeing therapist Susan (Suzanne Westenhoefer), to try to work things out. Just as they decide to split, their book How to Succeed in Marriage without Even Trying comes out and is a huge success. Our couple have to pretend to be living in bliss in order to sell the book.

The Kids are All Right

There are potentially two good stories that could have been told in this film: one about a difficult time in a relationship between two women, and one about their kids finding their sperm donor. And Annette Bening is outstanding. But what the hell is the story with this film’s plot?

Helen

A film about depression. You’re just racing to see where you can get it, aren’t you? Excellent that this deals with depression as something other than a disease-of-the-week film. Plus, there’s Ashley Judd. Nuff said.

4.3.2.1.

Follow four girls over three days in two cities as they ponder the one chance that has landed on their laps. 4.3.2.1 isn’t going to strain too much of the old gray matter, but it’s great fun. Plus, for some reason, Kerrys, her girlfriend and Cassandra spend most of the film in their underwear. Is anyone complaining?

The Town

Let’s face it, these days the cinemas are mainly full of rubbish, and that’s not just the isles. It’s rare you get to see a film with – wait for it – a good plot and fine acting. The Town is one of the exceptions. Ben Affleck wrote, directed and starred in this gem.

The Runaways

Thankfully, The Runaways delivers. From start to finish, the movie brings to life the story of the girls that soon became the stuff of legend: Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. It’ll have you whirling your head around screaming along to your favourite anthem and leave the cinema with the full intention of forming the best band in the world.

The Last Exorcism

How do we define a horror anymore? Is a good horror movie defined by its use of gore? Of obscuring the “baddy”? Of providing constant situations of “jumpy bits”? Horror nowadays seems to fall into a new genre of “Torture porn”.

Salt

Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt a CIA agent who may or may not be a Russian spy. Those damn Russians! It turns out that the wiley Russians have sleepers assassins all over the mighty U S of A, ready to take out a target when required. Is Evelyn one of these agents or has she been set up? If she is a Russian spy, why is she wearing a ushanka?

Stonewall Uprising

Screened during Dublin’s annual GAZE film festival this year, Stonewall Uprising is a documentary about the Stonewall riots of 1969. You may expect it to be good. It is amazing.

Undertow

Another feature in 2010’s GAZE festival, this film is an unusual ghost story set on the Peruvian seaside. A married fisherman struggles to reconcile his devotion to his male lover within his town’s rigid traditions.

Cracks

Again from GAZE, Miss G is a teacher in a really rather awfully spiffing English boarding school in the 1930s. She is gorgeous, sophisticated and all of the girls adore her. Some more than others, and many have (or “cracks”) on her. One such pupil is Di, who is also the captain of the school’s diving team and head prefect. Di expects everyone to heed her word, and revels in the attention Miss G gives her.

And Then Came Lola

More from GAZE, And Then Came Lola is a blast of a film. This is what happens when, after years of some great lesbian films but mostly awful lesbian films, the viewers get involved. Ellen Seidler and Megan Siler were obviously watching films and thinking “Jesus, I could do better than that!”

Highly Strung

There is something about French film-makers, Sophie Laloy included, they seem to have an innate understanding of the words between the lines, blending unexpressed emotions and mood into a seductive web. Laloy brings a sexiness and, eventually an uneasiness to Highly Strung, that is tempered with a smart twist.

Hannah Free

Oh, lesbian films. How do you disappoint us, let us count the ways! Let’s think back: Go Fish, High Art, Bound, and of course the “classic” of the genre, Claire of the Moon. Thankfully with Hannah Free those fears are unfounded.

Butch Jamie

An utterly charming, gentle film about being yourself. Michelle Ehlen takes this cheesy cliche and turns it into a delicate souffle of a film. The whole film centres around her and she strolls through the piece, at once witty and self-depreciating, then sensitive and tender.

Producing Adults

There is a Finnish saying that goes something like grown-ups produce children, then the children turn them into adults. Anyone who has ever cared for a child for more than a night will understand completely. Producing Adults is a contemporary tale of one woman trying to get pregnant and becoming an adult along the way.

Chloe

At its most basic, this film is based on the anxieties of a woman (Julianne Moore) over her seemingly womanizing husband (Liam Neeson), and a son who has alienated her from his life. When she becomes convinced that her husband is having an affair, she enlists the help of a call girl, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), to “test” his fidelity. This starts off a chain of events which eventually culminate in tragedy affecting her whole family.

Shutter Island

Another Martin Scorsese movie filled with great atmosphere and great acting by the master’s new favourite, Leonardo DiCaprio. This one gets the thumbs up from Gaelick’s Gooner.

A Single Man

There are always a excellent few film releases at Oscar time of year when the red carpet is rolled out, and so it was in 2010. Gooner challenges anyone to find a better film that Tom Ford’s “A Single Man”, a wonderful and moving story of love and loss.

I Love You, Phillip Morris

On the poster for I Love You Phillip Morris, Carey looks camp and gay for laughs, but blame the distributors and don’t let it put you off. This is a complicated, layered film full of laughs but not at the expense of the love and heat between the guys. For a gay audience it’s such a huge relief.

Whip It

Drew Barrymore is not like her ancestors. They were serious actors, artists dedicated to their craft. Drew seems to be happy once she’s having a good time, something that is most definitely happening in her directorial debut, Whip It.

Precious

Rated as one of the films of the year as early as February, Precious is a tough film by any stretch of the imagination. For all its depictions of tough times, it was rewarded with an Oscar win.

Scott Pilgrim

Among Pilgrim’s paramour’s exes is one Roxanne “Roxy” Richter (Mae Whitman) – her fourth evil ex and only ex-girlfriend – a self-conscious half-ninja lesbian.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The film adaptation of Steig Larsson’s book, released in Irish cinemas in 2010. Lead character, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), for whom gender is not among the considerations in choosing a sexual partner. And she’s gorgeous and weird!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1

Another adaptation, this time JK Rowling’s series, features incidental (and tres important) gay characters, right enough. Plus, of course, universal themes of good and evil, life and death, as well as an array of magical capers.

It seems an Angie (she said I could call her that) film is a convention for the unconventional.

Ok, ok, more than a slight crush. What? I’m a lezzer! So, it was with great …ahem …anticipation that I went to see her new film, Salt. When the wife and I sat down, she looked around and chuckled at all of the sisters who were doing exactly what we were doing. It seems an Angie (she said I could call her that) film is a convention for the unconventional.

Here there be spoilers!

The film itself is silly to the max. Angie (really she did) plays Evelyn Salt a CIA agent who may or may not be a Russian spy. Those damn Russians! It turns out that the wiley Russians have sleepers assassins all over the mighty U S of A, ready to take out a target when required. Is Evelyn one of these agents or has she been set up? If she is a Russian spy, why is she wearing a ushanka?

End of the spoilage

It is impossible to come out of Salt and not mentally compare it to The Bourne Identity. Both are one-against-the-agency action films, with the central character’s identity a mystery. Salt ain’t no Bourne though; the action sequences aren’t as polished, the central character isn’t as likable and everyday, even the music isn’t as good. Had anyone but Angie been in the main role, this film would be a flop.

With all of the hoopla around her life and the fact that she is so gorgeous she’s almost ugly, it’s easy to forget that Angie is a damn good actress. Well-seasoned as she is, she single-handedly drags Salt from midweek movie to get out of the rain, to Saturday night must-see with the mates.

If you’re going to see the delectable Ms Jolie, you may surprised that she tones down the sexy. Only in the middle section, when she’s all Nikita with the jet black hair, is she smoking. Overall, Salt is a laughable and, if you like action films, it’s one to see.

The queer community has accomplished so much when it comes to acceptance. But when it comes to the trans, cross dressers, gender queer and just plain butch, there's so much more to accomplish. Society may well be ready for two pretty girls in white dresses to walk down the aisle, but the wider society is still remarkably hateful when it comes to people whose gender isn't obvious to the casual observer.

About a week ago, somebody did to Rachel Maddow what I — if I was famous — would dread more than anything in the world. They leaked her yearbook photo. It’s not that it’s a bad photo but dude, it’s sparked some nasty conversations on the internet. While I took one look at the pic and smiled, cringing on her behalf, a lot of people FREAKED OUT. While the first thing that Buzzfeed (the website that published the photo) said was “I’d tap that,” comments that focused on the “pearl necklace” and “showing her girlfriend what a real man is like” followed the picture around the internet.

That’s exactly the kind of language we’d heard about Rachel Maddow before from the IdiotNet. The only change is the willingness (which I’m sure she treasures) to “tap that”. And when I say the IdiotNet I mean the websites that couldn’t be bothered looking past their initial reaction to the genius on their TV machine to the real social change that she represents.

They just felt fear, and went with nasty insults. The insults got nastier when they realised that she had once fit into their ideal of “how a woman should look”. Perhaps they’d decided it was ok for a woman to look like a dude if she had no other choice. A bit of patriarchial pity, I guess, goes a long way. But now — NOW — they realise that she wasn’t lying when she said, “It’s not like I’m trying to be girly and failing.”

Where I lived when I first came out, it seemed like everyone wore plaid shirts and doc boots, and I remember saying things like, “I like women who look like women.” It was problematic enough without being a lie. Which it was.

It’s hard to define butch. I may look at a woman and think “butch” when she thinks no such thing about herself. One of my more insightful twitter buds suggested this definition:

doesn’t do make-up but does use hair product
by @JacqKelly

But really, what we call butch or boi runs the whole gamut from women who get called “young man” sometimes to those who get called “sir” most of the time. I’m talking about women who wear jeans and hoodies and baseball caps, women who rock a three-piece suit, women who haven’t worn an item of women’s clothing in 20 years, women who bind and pack. Even those who still willingly wear skirts sometimes. It can be about identity; it can be just about looks; it can be playfulness too.

Whatever definition or type or degree of boi or butch she is, a woman who spends her life presenting as other than “how a woman should look” is a lightening rod for hate and violent rhetoric.

The queer community has accomplished so much when it comes to acceptance. But when it comes to the trans, cross dressers, gender queer and just plain butch, there’s so much more to accomplish. Society may well be ready for two pretty girls in white dresses to walk down the aisle, but the wider society is still remarkably intolerant when it comes to people whose gender isn’t obvious to the casual observer.

That is why we should celebrate butch and boi in our midst. Because until we are all celebrated, we’re still losing. If our families become accepted only because we manage to successfully play the straight game, we’re not really accepted.

Without further ado… allow me to celebrate some ungirly girls:

There’s Rachel Maddow, and since I started with her high school photo, I’ll finish with a photo that might be a bit more her style. The Standford and Oxford grad turned brilliant tv news anchor openly describes herself as butch and only wears makeup and “lady clothes” (her words) for television. Is on Twitter.

k.d. lang is iconic. Butch when lipstick lesbians were chic, she was the epicentre of controversy for large parts of the early 1990s. Her being out inspired Melissa Etheridge and Ellen Degeneres to come out, sparking a huge increase in lesbian visibility. Still awesome after all these years.

Model & actress Jenny Shimizu dated Angelina Jolie. But apparently this lesbian is also a pretty fantastic mechanic. I’m not sure I need to add anything here. Is on Twitter.

Samantha Ronson — known as SaMANtha Ronson by the IdiotNet. The bisexual butch DJ is the on-again, off-again consort to Lindsay Lohan. Also known for using language with reporters that would make, well, reporters blush. Is on Twitter.

Alison Bechdel — lesbian author of “tragicomic” Fun Home and comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. Also responsible for the “Bechdel Test” that makes all feminists depressed about our DVD collections.

Annalee Newitz — bisexual technology and science journalist, now editor of Gawker blog, io9. Often rocks a tie and waistcoat with geek accessories. Used to write extensively about sex, sexuality and gender. Has recently expressed a desire for a detachable penis. Is on Twitter.

Skyler Cooper — classically trained actress and personal trainer. Owner of amazing arms about the size of me. Hopes to own a gym someday. Once played a lesbian Othello. Is on Twitter.

At first it seemed like there were so few, I’d have no one to write about. It didn’t take me long to realise how wrong I was. Trawling through the sites for some news this morning, I found that Angelina is on the cover of this month’s Vanity Fair. In her interview, she talks about her kids including the cutie pie Shiloh.

Jolie says that when she was growing up she was most like her daughter Shiloh: “Goofy and verbal, the early signs of a performer…. I used to get dressed up in costumes and jump around.

However, other publications have jumped on this statement about Shiloh.

She likes tracksuits, she likes [regular] suits. She likes to dress like a boy. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”

Bad choice of phrase from Angie, as it confuses the great unwashed. Shiloh is a tomboy, as was I and many straight ladies out there. It doesn’t mean she wants to be a boy. Even if she does realise later that her gender is something to be assessed, it’s none of our business.

Commenters on the sites, though, are what made me write this. Ok, we’re talking the Daily Mail here (or the Daily Fail as our webmaster likes to call it), but some of the comments are misinformed:

Yes the child does look more male in posture and expression as well as looks.
Odd how two of the most beautiful women Cher and Angelina have daughters who want to be male*. Perhaps when nature achieves its peak of female perfection it throws a wild card ?

- Xanthe, Cambs UK,

While others are just nasty:

Ugh Angie! You dressed the girl to look like boys thus nobody on your house would ever be prettier than you! I won’t be surprised if Zahara and Vivienne turn out to be ‘tomboy’ as well.

- Cindy L, Acle, Norfolk

The majority of them are grand, normal people just saying what we all think:

Lots of little girls are tomboys and prefer to wear boys clothes ( I know I did!), but it doesn’t mean that they want to be boys

- Una, Dublin

Why does the media think it’s not ok for a girl to dress like a tomboy? Are all girls supposed to like pink? Really?!

Also, if it’s this bad for a girl can you imagine what it would be like for a boy? If it were Pax or Maddox who were playing with dolls or dressing in pink. Can you imagine the press? They’d be camped out on the kids.

The whole thing has an over-riding sense of “don’t worry, she’ll be ok”. Which, by extension, means it’s not ok to be transgender. The concept that this could be the case seems to be verboten, “surely such a cute kid can’t be one of them”, or “she’ll grow out of it”. What if she doesn’t?

She seems to have two parents who are letting her be herself, and if that means being himself, here’s hoping he gets an easier time of it at home than he will in the media.

*Can I just point out that Cher’s daughter, Chastity, doesn’t want to be male. Cher’s son, Chaz, is male.

Morning Gaelickers! For those of you resident in Dublin, are ye all set for Pride? A full list of events courtesy of Tabula Rasa can be found here. The influx of lovely lesbians has begun already, was in the Front Lounge last night and there were women everywhere. Love it! Enough talk of lovely ladies, let’s have a virtual rustle through the websites this week and see what good, bad and “I am bisexual, buy my record” stories the media are throwing at us.

The first ‘shocker’ of the morning, and seriously give yourself a moment to picture this, Kylie Minogue names Angelina Jolie on Lesbian Kiss List. Firstly, I found it funny that the article mentioned Kylie by her full name. Then again they said Angelina too. We like call her Ang here at Gaelick Towers; she said we could. Secondly, is there a woman out there who hasn’t got Ang on their list? Speaking of which why on earth hasn’t she been featured in our Alainn or Appalling section, I must have words. But really can you picture all 5ft no inches of Kylie and towering Angelina. Too cute. And it appears that she wouldn’t mind Megan Fox or Scarlett Johansson either.

G’wan ya good thing Kylie!

The Torygraph reports Warren Beatty’s daughter ‘to have sex change operation’

Kathlyn Beatty, 18, has called herself Stephen and is attending college dressed as a man, the National Enquirer reported.

That would mean, eejits at the National Enquirer and Daily Telegraph. that Warren Beatty’s son, Stephen, is having a gender reasignment treatment. Get it right, please.

Over to the girls at Lezgetreal for the latest on Megan Fox, she has a new tattoo.

Megan Fox told MTV that she got the tattoo in honor of Mickey Rourke.

If you’re a fan of miss Fox, and I know there are a few of ye, check out this arty shot of her as official underwear wearer for Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans. Imagine that’s your job title? Official Underwear Wearer. Tough job

Time for your obligatory pseudo-bisexual story of the week. Who’s it this week? The suspense! Well, wait no longer because New magazine has the goss Cameron Diaz steps on the bisexual bandwagon

If I’m going to be with a woman sexually, it doesn’t mean I’m a lesbian.

That’s why the word bisexual is out there Cameron. New movie coming out maybe? And I am still scared from clicking through some links on New magazine’s website. Delighted to see Peter Andre has been named Dad of the year. Must.stop.reading. Oh, there’s Megan Fox again. She must be tired of looking at herself in all these mags.

We’re all, that’s a royal we by the way, fierce excited about the upcoming Real L Word airing on Sunday night. NY Times reports Gay, Female and Overworked Like Everyone Else

The old joke surfaces early on “The Real L Word.” ”What does a lesbian bring on a second date?” The punch line: “A U-Haul.” “The L Word,” which has inspired this new series, spent its five-year tenure on Showtime tirelessly working to upend the perceptions that underlie such bons mots: that lesbians mate like penguins, for life, with comparatively less vigorous libidos and healthier bean dishes.

I’m going to reserve judgment until I see the first episode. Then I shall abuse

Over at ukgaynews good news for our trans friends, they report European Parliament Says the EU Should Do More for Transgender People’s Rights

STRASBOURG, June 16, 2010 – The European Parliament adopted today a strong position in favour of safeguarding transgender people’s fundamental rights.

Kristen Stewart, better known to most of us as Bella Swan or K-Stew, is just your average 20 year-old. She’s quiet and pleasant, likes her privacy and refuses to conform to what the rabid Hollywood beast wants from her.

Yet recently in Elle Magazine, she was quoted as comparing her fame to being raped. At least, that’s what the tabloid headline shrieked at the passer-by to catch the attention and drag them back to read about just what the Dickens the girl is talking about.

I had to do a double-take to make sense of what was all this was about. At a glance, the idea is that anyone would actually say that being famous is the equivalent of being raped will quite rightly ignite fury at a stupid quote from a girl far too young to know the weight of her words. However, upon reading further, the truth becomes clearer.

In the most recent edition of Elle Magazine, she actually said:

The photos are so… I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t handle it. It’s fucked. I never expected that this would be my life.

She doesn’t bluntly compare the two acts. She is far from being nonchalant about rape, as the headlines would have you believe. Granted the words that were actually spoken carry much weight in them, but to understand where she’s coming from, one would need to realize that she isn’t merely complaining about a few nosy photographers or journalists. I’m not saying that one should compare such a horrendous act so lightly, and she didn’t. How many ways can a person really feel violated? Your body. Your mind. Your ears. Your eyes. Your moral standing. Your privacy. Your self. The worst possible way is sexually, as rape is violation of all of these things. At worst she over-stated, at best she was misquoted.

We can be assailed in so many ways but all we really note are the physical methods. What if somebody broke into your home, went through each and every area of the place touching your personal items, rifling through your most private papers, books, letters, leaving their intrusive mark upon each item and then simply left without taking anything? You would feel distraught. Regardless of something being missing, the fact that anybody had actually had the audacity to plunge their hungry curious fingers into your belongings and your life is enough to drive you to some form of grief. It’s a feeling of the self being invaded without necessarily being touched

The article that quoted Stewart obviously took the quotes they found most shocking from the Elle interview and created a plausible reason to cast a disgusted look and shake your head and say “What a fool”.

She is a young actress, full of energy and happy to be an actress, not a celebrity. In a recent snippet of an interview with Stewart she is quoted as saying:

I don’t want to be a movie star like Angelina Jolie. Nothing about being a celebrity is desirable. I’m an actor. It’s bizarre to me that everyone’s so obsessive.

Yet constantly throughout a variety of websites of magazines, the articles attempt to paint the actress as ungrateful for her fame and whiny about the calibre of the celebrity-status she has seemed to reach. It’s as though the media resents her for not being thankful for the pedestal they’ve put her on. This kind of negative press surrounding this misstep just adds to the churning pot of bad media she spoke out about.

In the interview, she was described as

Notorious for not smiling in pictures, not chatting in interviews, not being cooperative in photoshoots. In person, Kristen comes across as a young actress who simply isn‘t into being famous.

Can you imagine a worse off-shoot of your job than having to be ‘happy’ all the time? And who better to badger her to the point of non-cooperation than a pushy team at a magazine or newspaper? It’s a vicious cycle if you think about it.

For someone like Stewart just wants to do her job, enjoy it and be a regular girl without being badgered constantly for information on her private life, it must be a nightmare. She has every right to feel violated. But raped? Wrong word Kristen.

Changeling is the first film in a while that I've really been looking forward to. It's the true story of a woman's courage when faced with a corrupt police force in 1920's America.
A struggle many people throughout the world can empathise with

Last night I decided I had had too much TV and needed to head out, after all, there’s only so much SVU a girl can take. So I headed off to Liffey Valley’s Vue cinema to see a film I’ve been meaning to see for a while now. Clint Eastwood’s Changeling is the first film in a long while that I’ve been looking forward to seeing. For some reason the films out of late haven’t caught my attention.

The film stars Angelina Jolie as Christine Collins, a single mother who, in 1928, comes home from work to be faced with every parents nightmare, her son, 9-year old Walter, is nowhere to be found. Upon scouring the neighbourhood she calls the police who tell her he’ll probably turn up and not to worry. This begins an amazing story which, as you probably know, is true

Five months later the police find a boy in Illinois and tell Mrs Collins that this is her son, she knows instantly that he is not but they refuse to believe her. I don’t want to ruin the story on anyone so I’ll leave it there but to say that what happens next is both shocking and uplifting is an understatement.

I’m not usually a big fan of Eastwood’s directing style, I find it very slow and methodical, but in this case I must make an exception. The film moves along nicely and we never loose sight of Christine’s journey or her turmoil. Jolie is brilliant and deserves a lot of credit for her portrayal of an amazing woman. She manages to depict the characters strength and courage but never looses sight of her vulnerability.

She is well assisted by fine actors such as John Malkovich who plays a Presbyterian minister who is taking on the corrupt LAPD in everyway he can. Malkovich is brilliantly understated and allows Jolie to take the lead but his characters drive and passion are not lost.

There were also a few smaller parts that were played with real dept, Amy Ryan and Jason Butler Harner are two such examples. Ryan playing a perfectly sane mental patient and Harner a very disturbed and violent killer.

The warbrobe and set design was flawless, not that I’m an expert in 1920′s style, but this really allowed you to be taken right into the story and really added to the piece as a whole.

This kind of film isn’t for everyone but if you enjoy being emotionally engulfed by a story then this picture is for you.

I don’t know about anyone else but I really don’t like the idea that magazines and TV shows bid for the first pictures taken of the child of a famous person, or a famous couple. Recently Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had twins and got over 10 million for the pics!!! In their case they gave the money to charity and fair play to them but I’m sure a lot of people keep the money and it just doesn’t sit right with me.

I know I have no right to judge people but it just seems off that parents would sell pics of their kids!!! I can understand if someone is being followed and basically stalked for a picture so they decide to just release one picture to all media in an attempt to recapture some privacy, but to take bids?

I don’t know, maybe I’m being a prude but it just seems wrong to sell a picture of a baby to the press. The real problem though is the people who buy mags etc to see the picture. If those people didn’t do that then the picture wouldn’t be worth anything and this kind of thing wouldn’t happen. So why do people run to buy the magazine that has the first picture of a baby such as that of Angie and Brad or Kate and Tom?

Is it really that interesting to see what this baby looks like? The baby hasn’t asked for all this attention, they didn’t enter into a career knowing they’d be followed and photographed? I think they deserve some privacy but I am clearly in the minority.

Tonight I was in the mood to watch something fun. I go through these phases of not wanting to think when I go to the cinema, usually it’s when I’m stressed and need to shut my brain down. Well I couldn’t have picked a better film for brainless fun than this. Talk about outlandish!!!! Even for those conusors of the Hollywood action film this movie really does require you not to think – at all. It has some good actors in it but the plot – well there was not one original thought that went into it.

The story sees James McAvoy playing a character as dull and low in self esteem as you could imagine. He is then literally sweep off his feet by the sexy Angelina Jolie and turned into a top assassin. Angie’s group of killing machines are headed by the ever brilliant Morgan Freeman but our three main characters are all caricatures of themselves. To say the events of the film are far fetched would be an understatement to say the very least.

Having said all that the film is fun and you do catch yourself smiling at the matrix-like pace of it all. I’m not going to recommend this one to my mates but it did make me laugh with it rather than at it which was a nice surprise and the three main actors really do try to add to a plot which is as thin and unoriginal as you’ll find.

One for a stressed day when you just want to forget reality and enjoy some nice popcorn away from it all.

I have been waiting for this film to come out for ages! I saw the trailer (here) a while ago and just loved it, but then I love animated films.

The story is of a Panda, played by Jack Black, who is a fanatic for Kung Fu but finds himself working, for his Dad, in a noodle restaurant. One day the prophesy names him as the Dragon Warrior and the resedent master needs all the patience he can muster as he tries to turn this lazy, out of shape slacker into a Kung Fu fighter ready to save the day.

This film isn’t just funny, there’s loads of action in it too and it really keeps your attention. This is helped by the freedom given to the directors through the medium of animation which allows the fight sequences to be quite impressive. I hope there’s some little overweight kid out there who sees it and is made believe a little in his/her ability.

The bad guy of the piece is a snow leopard by the name of Tai Lung, played by Ian McShane, and he really is a great character. From the get go he is painted as a really scary guy and this really ads to the piece.

If I was to find a fault with the film it’s that there are a good few characters who get very little screen time and I don’t think that ads anything to the film as a whole. All in all though it’s well worth a look.
