A group of civil society organisations are today calling on politicians to consider the human rights of transgender and intersex people as the Oireachtas Committee debates the Gender Recognition Bill this week.

On one hand social exclusion is a complex and multidimensional process to grasp, in another it is quite simple – people can be marginalised due to certain characteristics, and this means they do not have the opportunity to participate fully in all the areas of social life.
The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, will open the 4th European Transgender Council at Dublin City University this morning. More than 200 human rights activists have travelled from across Europe and Turkey to meet in Dublin for the three-day conference. Other keynote speakers will be Michael Farrell, senior solicitor at FLAC, and Senator Katherine Zappone.
Later this year Ireland will have the honour of hosting the European Transgender Forum. It’s a wonderful achievement as it’s due to the amazing work carried out by TENI, Transgender Equality Network of Ireland.
