Yes, I’ve prattled on before about the changing nature of marriage – through time and in its variations around the world – but I think it’s important to take a look at marriage in Ireland, trace its history, and ask: can equality be legislated?

Preliminary hearing in Zappone & Gilligan appeal tomorrow!
This just in from our friends at Marriage Equality: Senator Katherine Zappone and Dr Ann Louise Gilligan will be in the Supreme Court tomorrow (Friday, 21st October) at 10:45am for a motion to amend their pleadings. Although the Court will not be hearing the case tomorrow, its decision may provide us with an indication of how the Supreme Court is feeling about this case

Fear and loathing in the Rebel City
Fine Gael councillor and former Lord Mayor, Joe O’Callaghan, intends to introduce a motion for debate at Cork’s City Hall next month to ban wearing of burqas. Has anyone actually asked Ireland’s Muslim women what they think? Thankfully, the National Women’s Council of Ireland has.
LGBT Noise March for Marriage held in Dublin
The annual LGBT Noise March for Marriage took place this afternoon, setting out at 3pm from Dublin’s City Hall, Lord Edward Street. RTÉ reports that thousands attended. Estimates by those who were present put the crowd at 4,000 people.
My marriage is equal
I have great reservations about the phrase “gay marriage”. I didn’t get gay married. The forms didn’t have Gay Marriage Certificate Application on them. The judge didn’t sign a Lesbian Wait Period Waiver us. I think when you say “gay marriage” it says that being gay and married is different from being straight and married. I don’t buy that.

No Hate
Last night across the UK, vigils were held to speak out against hate crimes, and to remember those who have been victims. There is no hate crime legislation in Ireland, so in this country hate crimes technically don’t exist.

Civil Partnership Bill 2009 – Mary A and the Supremes
Crikey, I disappear into a world of heteronormativity for the weekend for a wedding, and – irony of ironies – it’s all go on the Civil Partnership Bill front. Rumour has it that the President is considering sending the Bill to the Supreme Court over its constitutionality.
Civil Partnership Bill 2009 – Seanad Stages
Hooray, hooray! After history was made last week, when the Dáil passed the Civil Partnership Bill 2009, the Bill makes its way to Seanad Éireann on both Wednesday and Thursday of this week for final debate. It should make for lively viewing and reading, if we hear from the likes of equality champions and anti-Bill conservatives.

Guess what’s back! That’s right, the Civil Partnership Bill 2009 returns, this time for the Report Stage in the Dáil. The debate takes place between 5pm and 9pm, tomorrow, Thursday, 1st July 2010. Tune in! Comment! Tweet!
