Katie Taylor’s decision to stay an amateur boxer has been followed by a move from the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) to bid to host the European Elite Women’s Championships in Ireland.

Katie Taylor has become a hero for both boys and girls. I think that is the real success story. I think it’s very safe to say that she is the first Irish female athlete to become a hero for young boys.

Gloves & Glory, a feature documentary focusing on women’s amateur boxing in Ireland, will be screened this Thursday in Dun Laoghaire as part of the Underground Cinema film festival. The film is the first documentary to highlight women’s amateur boxing in Ireland.

Morning Gaelickers! Webmaster here reporting from my very own ark. You know people say we, as in the Irish talk more about the weather than any other subject -I have yet to see any evidence of that. Okay I jest. Let’s get down to the headlines making the rounds this morning in cyberspace.

The relay starts at 9:30am from the Croke Park skyline and will wind its way north and south of the Liffey, finishing at St. Stephen’s Green at 12 noon.

Since the out-of-the-blue announcement by the IRFU that Ireland will field a women’s sevens side, it has been all go for the players in training camps and tournaments – and the pace continues through the summer, starting tomorrow with this weekend’s Amsterdam Sevens competition.

In she danced, looking focused as she listened to the lads in her corner. She toyed with her prey like a hyena, dancing around and waiting for her chance to pounce. As we watched eyes glued to her dazzling footwork, awestuck by her fast lightening fast left hand, arguing among ourselves about whether that was a point hit or not; we were told by our expert commentator that her tits were safe.

Katie Taylor has been shortlisted for the Irish Sports Council/RTÉ Sports Person of the Year Awards in 2011, 2010, 2008, 2007. This morning the winner was announced, and once again Taylor – undisputedly Ireland’s greatest athlete ever – has been overlooked. This is not a first for RTÉ, which seems to pride itself on almost invariably ignoring Taylor.

Katie Taylor fights China’s Cheng Dong in the final of The Women’s World Boxing Championships tonight. She should win. Having said that, Dong is a tall south-paw with a long reach so it won’t be easy. Dong will also be aware of how close Underwood came in the semi-final and what tactics she used. All in all, tonight’s should be a fascinating final. And you can see it live!

This week sees Barbados host the World Women’s Boxing Championships. Ireland are well represented by four boxers, including the inspirational Katie Taylor who will be going for her third world title in a row.
However, having searched, I can’t find a TV station airing any of the fights.
