We live in a celebrity-obsessed world. No news there. We all know it. Every once in a while though, you have to wonder why magazines bother trying desperately to make ‘news’ stories out of the fact that Angie frowned once last Tuesday.

Well, it’s been quite the lesbian weekend. Here we give a wee snapshot: Team Ireland at the Gay Games 2010 in Köln (aka Cologne); Clare Balding smacks down the Sunday Times; Darlene from Roseanne (finally) comes out. What else are we missing?!

The queer community has accomplished so much when it comes to acceptance. But when it comes to the trans, cross dressers, gender queer and just plain butch, there’s so much more to accomplish. Society may well be ready for two pretty girls in white dresses to walk down the aisle, but the wider society is still remarkably hateful when it comes to people whose gender isn’t obvious to the casual observer.

The sun is back! After the best part of 72 hours worth of rain, enough to make me order that ark off Ikea, the sun makes a welcome return. Right, news and views. Let’s start with our favourites, The Catholic Church, never one to shy away from making headlines.

You have to hand it to Lindsay Lohan, she is an expert at making lemonade from the truck-loads of lemons she seems to get lumped with. This week, she decided that she was sick of the rumours and gossip surrounding her break-up with Samantha Ronson.

We had thought the week would end on a quiet note for the LGBT community from a news perspective after all the celebrations regarding Sweden, Iowa and Vermont approving gay marriage. Well think again. From P!nk breaking lesbian hearts all over again to a 16 year old transexual model, and rounding it off with the continuing are-they aren’t-they who-cares breakup of Samantha Ronson and Lindsey Lohan.

Tony Blair v the Pope: Celebrity death match anyone? Lindsay and Sam no more, say its not so. Vermont joins Iowa in allowing gays to wed and gays and lesbians don’t buy as many subarus as they should. They’s shoping for jeeps and Saturns and if you watch the L Word, mini coopers.

From Britney to Barack, new gay programmes and closeted footballers. It was a busy week.
