Veda, one of everyone’s favourite queens from the Dublin drag scene is back with a second album! Veda’s new album, Transphibian will be the sound of the summer if my Facebook homepage is anything to go by!

Following a massive show of support on crowd funding site fundit.com, Veda has returned in a haze of glitter with an EP that will define your summer. Featuring Gavin Friday, David Hoyle and Caoimhe Derwin, this four track offering will have you in disco bliss.

The press release tells us that with Transphibian:

Written on New York’s notorious Fire Island, she builds on her love for electronic dance music with a feel good summer’s day sound with a thumping disco beat to take you through to night. Packed with humour, attitude, and the trademark of any icon; pain, this is a record to fill any dance floor.

I caught up with Veda in the dressing room prior to her regular Wednesday show, Space n’ Veda, to find out more.

How did you choose the name of the album?

So me and my bessie mate Paul were in my car around Christchurch…You know these big yellow trucks that are Viking Splash things? Well we kind of describe everything in drag terms anyway, in terms of trans everything, so I described the truck as a transphibian and we kinda belly-ached over it. We were very shortly afterwards on holiday in Fire Island where myself and Davina and Shirley and the crew kinda go to visit my gay sister and hang out, and around Fire Island there’s a whole culture of the invasion, where there’s this big drag party on the 4th of July where all of these drag queens from one area, Cherry Grove invade this other area, the Pines. These invasions go back to the 70s!

Paul and I were swimming, and we were making all these fish puns like “clam down, clamp down”, “moules are made to be broken”. Very puntastic!

I was swimming in drag, and had an idea about a drag mermaid, a sort of fluid gender and sexuality, where someone would be a man on land and a woman in the sea.

Beyond that, working on one song in particular (Transphibian); I grew up in Malahide and was always bullied, so I spent a lot of time by sea by my own. It was a place to escape, and somewhere I used to think about escaping home and the escaping the abuse.

So when thinking about transsexuality, the song became more of an anthem and a bit more personal and it was touching on things I hadn’t thought about in a while. So I guess in a way it was healing. It also taps into drag queen energy from Fire Island and sends a triumphant message!

Who are your main musical influences?

Well I’m a huge fan of rock and roll, Thin Lizzie, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and The Smiths. When I was a teenager it was electro-pop music, 80’s Electronia: Depeche Mode..all the big bands, anything you can dance to! And then there’s rave culture, EMF and Crush…

Now it’s the Scissor Sisters, Lykki Li, Friends…

What was the inspiration for this album?

The inspiration for the name and inspiration for the album are same things I think. The inspiration for the sound is wanting a sort of ‘beach-y’ album. I came up with some of the songs last year. I was recovering from a horrific break up and I decided to travel. I went on a lot of beach holidays; Sitges, Fire Island, the Caribbean…I got over that depression and then I wanted to make a super summery, really beachy album. I wanted Supermarché to be party-like, to make you think of a foreign holiday, as opposed to calling it Lidl!

I loved Stars Edge, what was your favourite track from it and why?

I think Finally. It’s my favourite, the first one I wrote. It’s poignant for me, and I still perform it acoustically at shows. I wrote it after my father died, so there is something about the sadness of that time in the fibre of the song. There are much more fun numbers on the album, but that’s my favourite.

And your favourite track from the new album?

That’s a hard one! Recording with Gavin was monumental for me, I’m a huge fan. Picking one is really tough, I think have to go with Supermarché! It’s the one I want to perform the most, the one that makes me feel the most giddy and light-headed. I’ve listened to them all like a squillion million times, and I have loved each one at some point more than the others. The video just came out for Transphibian, so that’s my favourite for today!

Have you always wanted to write and sing your own songs as well as the drag shows, or was Ladyface the first time you started writing your own songs?

I was actually in a band before then! Before Ladyface, I was in a band called Daddy’s Little Princess. We had worked on an album but the band broke up before it was released. We had done gigs with the Scissor Sisters, performed around London…

As a kid, as a trans kid, I was always fantasising about performing. I was obsessed with glamour girls, with Blondie, with Jerry Hall, with Grace Jones albums; it was my fantasy from an early age to have an album. It was the idea of the tangible thing…that was what I first fell in love with.

If you could sum up Transphibian in 5 words, what would they be?

Wet, hot, fishy, euro, trash!

Is there anything you’d like to add?

David Hoyle is one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met, it was fantastic writing Supermarché together. He has a huge writing talent and his voice is probably the best voice in the world, so having him on the track is amazing for me. I’m excited about doing other stuff with him in the future!

Gavin Friday, I worked with him in Mr. Pussy’s when I was in college and also Caoimhe Derwin from The Chalets – I had girl crush on her for years! It’s like a full-circle moment, not just about the album but also about whom I’ve worked with.

Also a huge shout out to Ian Henderson, who produced and co-wrote the album and who has been so good to me!

I think that’s all the shout outs…

Judging by her answers, we will be seeing great things from her this year!

What made you want to enter the Ms. Gay Ireland competition?

I entered Ms. Gay Ireland for a few different reasons, but I mainly entered for fun, I also felt I could represent gay Irish woman in a modern and non-stereotypical way. I wanted to change peoples’ normal stereotypical views, and show them any woman, regardless of looks, background or upbringings could be gay.

What was your favourite part of the competition?

Being back stage was such fun, the other contestants were the nicest, funniest bunch of girls I’ve ever met and it really helped my nerves before going onstage with each of us encouraging each other on.

Is there any charity you are representing and if so, what made you choose it?

I picked BeLonG To, based in the Outhouse in Dublin. I thought it was perfect because it fundamentally is the stepping-stone for young gay people to begin to discover their sexual identity in a safe and comfortable setting.

As the newly crowned Ms. Gay Ireland, what do your duties entail?

So far I’ve been doing interviews and raising awareness about BeLonG To. At the moment in work, another bartender named Ronan is representing The George in Mr.Gay Ireland so I’m boosting his campaign… We’d love to have both the titles in the George. Haha greedy I know!

What are you hoping for during your year holding the crown?

I’m hoping for BeLonG To to get more funding , and more young people will know about it. I’m also looking forward to Ms. Gay Ireland being held in TheGeorge next year, it’s going to really raise awareness about the Ms. Gay Ireland competition.

How would you describe your overall experience of the Ms. Gay Ireland competition?

Fun. I made loads of friends and enjoyed every minute of it.

Would you do it all over again?

Yes, it was so much fun, and as nerve-racking being on stage was, I’d do it all over again.

This event has been rescheduled for the 30th September:

Due to circumstances beyond our control the performance by Alexandra Stan due to take place in The George bar and nightclub next Friday August 19th, has now been rescheduled to September 30th. Tickets already purchased for the event will be valid for the September 30th show or a full refund is available from the bar.

When I received the press release for this event, I couldn’t for the life of me place who Alexandra Stan was. So, off I went to YouTube, and realised that I have been dancing away to her track Mr. Saxobeat for months without knowing it.

For anyone else who may also be curious as to who Alexandra Stan is, check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS76eS34Y0c

We are promised a high energy performance, as Alexandra will perform a number of her hits include 2011 smash hit Mr. Saxobeat, her debut single Lollipop and her latest single Get Back.

The hit Mr. Saxobeat is described as:

A 2011 dance floor filler and the most viewed video on You Tube on the week of its release, Mr. Saxobeat, is Alexandra’s biggest success in Ireland. An up-tempo dance song with house elements, the song features a saxophone throughout and uses some trace beats.

Alexandra Stan will appear live on stage at The George from 11.30pm on Friday September 30th

This is a ticket-only event and tickets are priced at 12euro and are available directly from The George bar.

Well if you don’t remember them, I’m sure you remember the song “Crying At The Discotheque” from the early 2000s? Be warned, if you haven’t heard it, and if you click the link below, I accept no responsibility for the fact that it will be stuck in your head all day!

In keeping with their trend of bringing top pop acts to Dublin, The George bar have Alcazar perfoming as part of their weekly Friday Mischief night. Anyone into cheesy camp music should head along!

Admission is €10 at the door.

Alcazar will take to the stage at midnight!

Mischief is a new night which started in The George bar a few weeks ago. Taking place every Friday, the idea behind the night is that each week has a different theme, and so far the organisers have gone all out to give the clubbers in attendance the best experience possible.

The theme of the initial Mischief was a Thai Full Moon Party, which was basically a UV paint party, and was an excellent night. There were literal buckets of alcohol! The following week featured a Jagerbomb Party, last week was a Eurovision Party and this week showcases the first Beach Party ever held in the George.

The Beach Party@The George looks set to be the most elaborate theme yet, with the club promising:

Massage Huts!
Tanning Booths
Free lays on arrival
Drinks served in neon buckets
Beach Balls!
21 Degrees inside the club!
Paparazzi
Very best beach party tunes!
Fire Dancers
Fire performers

It looks like Mischief will continue to bring a diverse range nights and themes to the scene, so I would recommend people go along and check it out.

I can’t wait to see all the mammies on Mother’s Day, my own Ma is even threatening to make an appearance; Scarlet for me! So be the best son or daughter ever and ‘Bring Your Ma to Bingo’ this Mothers’ Day, it will be only massive and I promise I won’t mortify you too much!

On Sunday 13th February, Shirley Temple Bar will host her 700th Bingo Show, which is the longest-running show on the Irish gay scene. According to a press release from the George

There will be massive prize giveaways, celebrity guests including RTE Off The Rails’ stars Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon, and the usual hi-jinx and comedic madness, which the show has become famous for.

Shirley’s show was first on in 1997, and it is because of this show that The George has been the undisputed the place to be on Sundays. Combining bingo with a drag show may sound crazy, but it definitely works. Numbers such as Defying Gravity and The Rhythm of Life are integral parts of the show, and prove extremely popular with punters week in and week out.

Also from the press release:

“Following my Alternative Miss Ireland win in 1997, I was looking for a way to further my career and being a bingo caller seemed like a great option, it was either that or Twink’s PA! So 14 years and 700 shows later, I’m still here. I’ve never stuck at anything that long! I must be having a great time – and my 700th Bingo Special, will be better fun than ever”, commented Shirley Temple Bar

Once you’ve played with Shirley’s bingo balls, bingo will never be the same again….

Shirley’s 700th Bingo Special takes place in The George on February 13th.

The show starts at 9.00pm

Entry is free before 11.00pm.

One aspect of the scene has always perplexed me. It is commonplace to hear lesbians on any given night bemoaning the fact that the scene is so male orientated. While this may often be the case, when women’s nights are put on, women don’t seem to go to them, and I for one would like to get a discussion going on this!

It’s no secret that I like to go out a lot. Probably too much, but I’ll be the first to admit that. I have something of a love for the scene. I know many people hate it, but I think it’s great that here you can pretty much go out anywhere and 9 times out of 10 you’ll run into someone you know, or you’ll end up getting chatting to some lovely randomers in the smoking area. I have had friends who have lived abroad for periods of time tell be how different the gay scenes are there, and that you’ll rarely see the same face in the same place twice. People in Ireland sometimes complain that the faces on the various gay scenes never change, but I kinda like that. It reminds me of the local club at home, where going out means a night of catching up with old friends in between all the dancing.

However, one aspect of the scene has always perplexed me. It is commonplace to hear lesbians on any given night bemoaning the fact that the scene is so male orientated. While this may often be the case, when women’s nights are put on, women don’t seem to go to them. Sure, they go along to the first few to check out the vibe, but after that, the numbers always seem to quieten down. It is because of this that some nights have folded before they even got going, and why the likes of Kiss finished up last year.

I guess I’d like to get a discussion going on this issue, and ask readers for their views and see what it is that would turn them off a night, or what they’d like to see from a night out?

I’ll end this piece with a quick “What’s on Guide” to the lesbian scene, and remind readers that at faKe this Friday, 14th January, there is a faKe sale with entry €6 for all.

Minx takes place in the Dragon on George’s Street on Bank Holiday Sundays.

Admission is free before 10pm and €10 after, or €8 with student card.

Pussy Wagon is held in the George on the 1st Friday of every month.

Admission is free before 11pm, and €5 after.

FaKe is on in the Academy on the 2nd Friday of every month.

Admission usually €10, €7 concession.

Revival is a women’s night aimed at over 35s and is held in Copper Alley. Keep an eye peeled on Gaelick for the next night this is on.

Admission to Revival is €7 before 11, and €10 after.

Sisters is a women’s community event which takes place once a month.

Admission is €7, or €5 with concession.

Pussy Wagon is the women’s night held in The George on the first Friday of every month. Sporting live performances, it has a different vibe from other lesbian nights out there and this fact, coupled with the varied set lists from the various DJs who have played there so far, makes for an excellent night out.

It’s also great to see The George hosting a women’s night as many lesbians feel that it can sometimes be very male-centric.

Last week, there was performances from “Fierce”, the pole dancer I blogged about previously in the review of Strictly Come Pole Dancing (held as part of Space n’Veda every few months) as well as a dancer in a cage on the dacefloor, which proved very popular with the patrons, judging by the amount of jaws on the ground when Fierce took to the stage!

I caught up with the creator of the night, DJ Karen, for a chat about Pussy Wagon. When asked what her motivation behind starting up the night:

My motivation for doing Pussy Wagon was basically to bring something different to the women’s scene that hadn’t been done before in The George or any other Women’s night.

I also asked what makes Pussy Wagon different from other lesbian night’s out there.

I’ve brought in guest DJ’s from Brazil, Brighton, Cork and Dublin; and I’ve also provided live acts such as Lisa Maffia (of the So Solid Crew) on the opening night. Alecia Karr, the UK’s top P!NK tribute act has performed at Pussy Wagon, there have been Burlesque performances and most recently a pole-dancing show with girl dancers in the cage etc…I’m just mixing up really, instead of going to a gig with a DJ stuck in the corner…And at only €5 in after 11pm and great drink promos who could complain!!

If that doesn’t encourage Gaelick readers to hit up the next one, I don’t know what will! The next Pussy Wagon will be taking place on the 12th of November, due to another gig in The George on the first Friday. And this one will have Jelly wrestling, which should not be missed, as well as DJ Jules from Cork on the decks.

Is the reason most major gay pubs/clubs don't try to attract lesbians down to the simple fact that we lesbians don't represent a large enough percentage of the LGBTQ community who get out there and party? Or are lesbians their own worst enemy, or are the clubs just not giving us what we want?

Last Friday I decided to pop out for a few drinks with some friends. We met up in The Front Lounge and after a few scoops we headed off to the new ladies’ night at The George, Pussy Wagon. We were all looking forward to it as the George is an institution and none of us had ever been there when it was ladies only. The Front Lounge had a great atmosphere, so when we headed over my friends were ready for a dance.

When we arrived, it was €5, we popped our coats in the cloakroom and headed in. Unfortunately it was half empty, and that is being generous. The dance floor was packed but everywhere else was fairly empty. I hope it picks up after a few weeks as having a ladies’ night in the George is long overdue.

It has gotten me thinking, why is it that the same lesbians who complain that there are no nights for us don’t attend the night when it is put on? Alright, some people are not taken with the George, I can understand that, I just feel it is a shame that a new major night is put on yet attended so badly.

I am a big fan of caKe and am delighted to see so many attend, but variety is wonderful, so why not support new nights, or at least give them a try? Is the reason most major gay pubs/clubs don’t try to attract lesbians down to the simple fact that we lesbians don’t represent a large enough percentage of the LGBTQ community who get out there and party? I find that hard to believe, but I couldn’t blame The George if they cancel Pussy Wagon unless it picks up. After all, Friday nights are usually heaving in there.

Are lesbians their own worst enemy, or are the clubs just not giving us what we want? What do you think?
