The Real L Word, it has arrived on the shores of America. And may it stay there. The opening is our introduction to the six LA lesbians who have agreed to be followed around by a crew, showing how they live in their natural habitat. Sapphic Safari if you will.

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about the best lesbian couples on the telly, asking you who were your favourite. You could’ve smacked me in the ass and called me Mary when the results came in. I know that The L Word was popular and, for some poeple, the only lezzers ever on television, but Bette and Tina ran away with the vote.

Let’s be honest, in the history of tellyland we’ve been pretty starved for lady-loving ladies. Over in the states they’ve had it even worse than us. In my lifetime (shurrup down the back) the first lesbian couple on TV were Beth Jordache and Margaret Clements in Brookside back in 1993, American audiences had to wait until Tara put a spell on Willow in 2000. Anyone who, like me, has an heroic big sister who would readily go into battle to for you, can completely understand why everyone loves Jane Lynch. She is, like that big sis, smart, scathingly sarcastic, sassy as all hell and, underneath, soft as a kitten.

Jenny is continuing down the road of inappropriate behaviour by throwing a baby shower for Max. It’s in the style of Willy Wonka so all of our gals are decorating Shenny’s place with oversized ‘candy’ and singing along out of tune, with Jenny overseeing events. It turns out that this is Max’s favourite story; Jenny remembers that but not his gender?

What kind of nonsense will the lesbian world have foisted upon it from Chaiken Towers this week? Who could possibly say, when it sometimes seems like the plot lines are automatically generated at random from a machine. At least it couldn’t possibly be as boring as episode four..!

We’re halfway through the final season and this episode is perhaps the weakest so far. There’s plenty of extraneous dialogue and scenes which are too long or somewhat repetitive. Also, for some unrevealed reason the L Wordettes seem to be in a perpetual state of grazing and lounging around The Planet but more on that later…

When the present, and final, season of The L Word ends will that be it? No more gorgeous women who are rich but don’t work, sipping drinks in expensive, painfully hip fashions and locations. It’s like totally true to life y’know? So, to keep us entertained Ilene ‘Mama’ Chaiken has penned a spin-off.

After last week’s Shennyanigans what will happen? Will it be all doilies and docs, will Shane admit that at it was a sorry-screw or will Jenny decide to study this new side of their relationship until she squeezes all of the fun out of it and writes another piece of tortured shite? Oh she dies! That’s right. Can’t come soon enough.

Console thineselves, episode two marks the quarter-way-through-point of the very last season. With only six episodes left, what does episode two tell us about the identity or motivations of Jenny’s future killer? Thankfully, not a lot and this episode focuses on the scorching scenes of smut and splendour that The L Word does so well.

Here it is: The final season of The L Word has begun airing in the US. And if past seasons have taught us anything, we sure as hell don’t know what to expect. Particularly as the timeline for this season begins three months after the end of season 5, when one of the main characters has been found dead in Bette’s swimming pool.
